It's very difficult to troubleshoot your electrical woes with only the description you give. Forget about what David Silver says, you can use any modern blinker relay. You gotta do one thing first: In the blinker relay, one of the wires is the one that goes to the handlebar switch. Connect it directly to battery +. Now, turn your switch to either side. The indicators should lit -obviously not blink. That way you troubleshoot first your wiring, to make sure all the wiring and bulbs are OK.

When you are don, buy a blinker relay -you will probably need a three-wire one. One of the wires go to battery+, another one to ground and the other to the handlebar switch -the one you previously used to connect to + and troubleshoot the wiring.

Good luck

Steven,

I like Raul's idea for testing your wiring just make sure your battery is good and it is properly charged. If your battery voltage is too low you probably won't get flashing. You will also want to find a wiring schematic/diagram and check all the connections and grounds to ensure it is hooked up properly. Check your bulbs to see if both filaments are intact if they are double filament bulbs.

Most auto parts carry newer electronic relays that operate off a timer, not a bimetal strip like the old style, with the timer type it doesn't depend on load to flash.
Most of the ones I've seen are marked as for trailer towing, because they don't flash super fast when the extra lights are hooked up.

The one in my bike is off the shelf and was a direct fit with no mods.  I went to smaller sigal lights and the original one wouldn't flash.

Main criteria is toi get one that matches the socket pattern.

Ken.

Hi Steve.

You said that your 400/4 was an import?  Can you post the frame and engine numbers and maybe some pictures?  That way we can work out what model you have and recommend a manual and wiring diagram.

Keep in mind if your battery is low the relay will not work or go very slow.

If they don't light on the same side then the wiring is connected wrong. The front ones connect in the headlight shell and the rear ones connect under the seat, at the top of the fender. The fronts have 2 filament lamps, the dim one is for a marker light. When the ignition & headlights are on and low beam selected (assuming you have a headlight on/off switch, otherwise with ignition & low beam on) the markers should be on. Setting the turn signal switch turns the marker on the selected side off and the signal (bright filament) on through the flasher. The rear signal also goes on.
So make sure the wiring for all the signals and markers is correct so that the right marker goes out and the right signals go on when you signal right, same for left. Then you can go after the "relay".
As stated, normal auto flashers work fine except for the different shape. If you can find a 3-terminal flasher with power, ground, and load terminals that will work best; there's a green wire hanging loose beside the Honda 2-terminal flasher's mount that is perfect for the ground connection.
