Carb selection - another old CB550
« on: April 02, 2007, 02:38:18 PM »
I picked up another old CB550K this weekend, a '77...The seat, tank, and exhaust are all unuseable, but the rest looks sound...rusty, but sound...only 11,237 miles, one owner from new (I have the title & registration), last NYS inspected 1988...   :o

Anyway, it has these carbs on it...They don't want to move...I also have a set of good 022A's from another CB550K...cleaned & ready to go...

Which would be the better set to use?? I'd like to get it running just for a go-to-work bike while I work on my CB500 pet project...

The inlet and outlet diameters of those carbs, as well and the overall length is different from the 022As.
You will need to change the intake plenum and rubbers behind the carbs, and the metal intake manifolds and rubber couplers ahead of the carbs, because the carb to carb spacing is also different from the earlier style carbs.

Other than that, no problem! ;D

OK, I have all that...from either the 74 or 76, I forget which...probably the 74, as I think you got the 76 carbs...   ;)

But are the 022A's more desirable?? I think I read that the '77 jets are pressed in rather than screwed?? I don't really care, I'd just like the set that doesn't require as much maintenance...   :P

unless you're changing the carbs from the stock configuration, i'd go with the PD carbs. yes, the pilots are pressed in, but they come out easily enough if you need to clean them, and the non-oring setup is better IMO.

I forgot to list the number -

PD
46AA0F
and then a little triangle pointing down...with that second A in a square...

OK. I can pull them off and see what they look like.

Hmmmm...They look pretty good...the slides move freely, too...

Question - here, part # 4, is a pair of steel straps that connect each pair of carbs. One has the choke clamp on it. Should that part of the strap going between the carbs be flat??

Mine isn't...   :P

Got the carbs off pretty easy, too!   ;D  Doing it 10 or 15 times helps!!!   ::)

Here's a pic of that strap...

I just firured out that the strap is on upside down  ::) ...so I straightened it...  ;)

Bowls look clean. Someone had it apart. Hope they knew what they were doing.

...But after that strap mis-alignment, confidence is low...   >:(

Your strap was indeed bent, here's a pic of a set if it helps.
