whats the best way to clean the gasket and gasket sealer off the head without damaging??

It seems that I should have these clean as can be, but I can't get down to the mating surface. I have scraped a little with a chisel, but afraid of damaging. Is there some type of solvent that I can use?

whoa griff! keep the chisels/scrapers etc. away from the aluminum, especially gasket mating surfaces.
should be a spray on gasket remover product down at your auto supply shop, permatex or something.
after the product does its job and lifts/loosens the old gasket material, use a plastic scraper or fine steel wool.

you can buy gasket remover at any auto parts store. use it outdoors as the fumes are terrible. it may take multiple applications but it always works. use a plastic scaper or a putty knife. a metal scraper will easily take out a chunk of aluminum if your not careful.

You can get a special gasket remover that fits on the end of a drill or die grinder. It's a rubber disc with numerous rubber "fingers" that gently remove the gasket.

The gasket came off but there is a resdue left behind. I'm thinking this is gasket sealer. I say gasket because it looks like there may be part of the gasket still there. Maybe the gasket split and left some on there? It feels smooth though and I was able to chip some away like it was rust. I'm going to get some gasket remover. If need be, I shall post a pic. Thanks guys..

Try spraying a little brake cleaner on it and rubbing it with a fine Scotch-Brite pad.
