74 CB550K0 handle control switch assy
« on: April 03, 2007, 03:19:11 PM »
Hi,

This is my 1st post.  I just got a 74 CB550K0 last week (from a fellow Honda CB nut who is a mechanic at our Honda dealer).  After fiddling around for a day, the engine started to run for 5 sec.  I think the rest is a matter of cleaning the fuel delivery system. Anyway, it is in a cosmetically great condition, and it will be a nice restore base in a near future.  In alaska, we have 4-5 months of riding season (and interior Alaska is dry), so this may have contributed to the good preservation.  I'm gradually going to get the correct parts.  Anyway, somehow all wirings from the handle controls (e.g. turn signal, horn, kill switch, starter button) were cut off.  I could solder new wires, but it seems to be too painful.

I have a couple of newbie questions.

(1) Is it possible to get the original parts list (from Honda dealer)?  I found a downloadable one for CB550F (not for K) from honda4fun site, but I'm not sure if they are exactly same as for CB550K0.  I'd like to get the correct parts.
(2) Is there anyone with the correct parts list who can check the part numbers for the switch assy?  I need both right and left side.
(3) Also if you can suggest me a good place to get parts (other than ebay), I appreciate it.

I'll have a lot of more questions soon, but that's all for now.
Thank you,
Naoki

Welcome Naoki - The model list in the Online Parts Fiche at http://www.crotchrocket.com/   for 1974 shows only the 'CB550'.  The exhaust page shows the 4 mufflers so it might be a good assumption that the diagrams and parts numbers are for the K model. The 550F as well as the 550K are listed for 1975.
Hope this helps with questions 1 and 2..

I've seen them listed on ebay for about $110.  I found a used one that worked for me for about $40 with shipping.

The 550K0 still had the switch to turn the lights off.  This is a HUGE deal to me, so I am specifically looking for a '74 550.  Make sure you get the right one.

'74 was the first year for the 550, so it's revision zero, or 'K0' which is typically dropped, hence CB550.  Here's what I do, I go to crotchrocket and look up the part number.  Then I cut & paste it into motogrid's quick parts lookup.  Motogrid will spit out which models & years the part was found on.

So, for you control module, crotchrocket lists the right cand control module as part number 35200-374-671.  I copy that to my clipboard and then I go to motogrid and paste it into the parts lookup.  They say that the following models used that switch assembly:

35200-374-671 1973 CB750K3 Switch Assy  1 $51.46
35200-374-671 1974 CB550     Switch Assy 1 $51.46
35200-374-671 1974 CB750K4 Switch Assy  1 $51.46
35200-374-671 1975 CB550K1 Switch Assy  1 $51.46
35200-374-671 1975 CB750K5 Switch Assy  1 $51.46

As the fact that the part is listed with a price in no way means you can actually buy it, then I go to e-buy (with all of the patience that I can muster), bid low, bid many times, win very few.  But I have won (way, way too many times  ;D ).  I scored a complete set of bars (semi-ape hangers, yeesh) with both controllers for a couple of bucks not too long ago, so It can be done.

I have a '75 CB550-K1 (first revision year, so it's K1) and I have the headlight on-off switch too.  Always makes getting my inspection fun as here in NYS the headlight must be locked on while in the run position, unless you'r grandfathered like my dinasour is.

Good tip on the Motogrid site CSendker :D   Much more efficient than the method I used to use. Thanks

Thank you very much for all the helpful info.  Especially the motogrid trick and online parts catalogue is cool.  Using this, I already scored one switch assy from ebay.  Now I discovered that the ignition switch refuses to power up intermittently...  I need to disassemble it.
