will not drop revs quickly to idle
« on: April 05, 2007, 10:16:45 PM »
have just bought an '82 cb 650 and am having trouble with revs not dropping off when throttle closed. It is an electronic ignition (factory original) and has keihin cv carbs. Spark is good, revs freely apart from short stammer from idle when cracking it open, and idles well when warm. Anyne got any ideas? Looking forward to tearing the roads up down here in New Zealand

Throttle cable or throttle grip binding slightly? ???

CV carbs are very sensitive to any airleaks around the boots, so check there. Stumble off idle with revs that won't drop quickly can also indicate an out-of-sync condition.

I would check this first, since it's the easiest.

An indication it's an air leak vs something sticking (cable, throttle, slide) is by watching the action of the cable.  When it continues reving, is the action at the carb end back to idle position or is it slowly moving twords that position?  If it's back at the idle position it's probably an air leak at the boots - if you can see it slowly moving twords idle postion then something is sticky.  I'd then pull the throttle & lube everything well & try again.

Give it a blip and close the throttle quickly when you want to drop down.--a prescription, though not a solution.

Thanks for the advice. Have been through all your suggestions except carb balancing as I have yet to obtain one (might make one of the cheapies from within these pages). Bike is running a little better now so a step forward, cheers.
