Because I tore my bike down completely to redo it from the bottom up...and taking the motor out was a pain in the butt. I am going to be custom painting the frame and could foresee damaging the nice new paint putting the motor back in...plus i'm doing the headgasket and if that messes up again I don't want to have to pull the motor out all over again just to fix that. It just makes things much easier. For the money i spent on the kit plus the hour and a half I spent installing it, it was more than worth it. Now If I do any modifications down the road...which I will, I also don't need to pull the whole motor to do them. All in all it's more for just planning ahead. My bike wasn't original enough to care about that aspect of it. Plus with the tank on you can't see any of the kit at all.

So yeah they aren't for everyone, but now i'm not dreading putting the motor back in what will be a nice fresh custom painted frame(after tonight lol)

Cycle, try to putt the head off once with the engine in. unles syou have the A bike, not going to happen. Plus this mod does not weaken anything. Probably makes it stronger actually.

Each to his own.  I can remove an engine in 30 minutes by myself and have it back in in 15.  No scratches.  I built the tool to do it, because I do so many, 10-15 a year for free.

Hey guys, no problemo. Just love it when someone makes nice things. For me it's no big deal to fabricate it myself, do it all the time. But I grant it to people who dare to do things like this.
I am in this "business" for over 30 years and lifted engines heavier than the 750 in and out of frames, no worries. Seen a lot of builds, streetfighters, bobbers, choppers and racers, that people 'lay there hart in'.(is that good english???) and love them for that, even if it's not always to my liking, but can't argue over taste.

Cheers, Rob

I see where you guys are coming from, but after the first time taking the motor out of the bare frame on my 750...I don't want to go through that again. So this was the perfect answer. Plus I love cutting things up and welding stuff...lol

Guys, I have the first two promised to members here. Charles is making 4 of them for me and will be glad to do more. He has not been able to get into his shop and do them for months, but I saw him Saturday and he looked better than he has in years.

Send me a PM with your name and number - you will get on the list. These will be the exact same ones as you see, made by the same 68 year old machinist from my designs. I will assemble the kit and send it to you. Absolutely no money until I have them in-hand.

Regards,
Gordon

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share pics of the frame kit I had installed that Gordon designed and helped fabricate with the help of  his good friend and machinist Charles.  I can't take any credit for the installation, all I did was follow Gordon's copious instructions, and cut the frame rails with a hacksaw (crooked too  :-[).  I had the kit installed/welded by a local fabricator here in Austin that works on building a lot of custom roll cages for cars that was recommended by my BMW mechanic.  This kit was top notch, and will allow me to remove the entire top end while leaving the bottom end in the frame.  No more #$%*ing from the Mrs., you know like, "Its sooo heavy...my back hurts...I hate getting grease on my dress...waaa waa waa!", none of that $hit any more!

Just want to give a big thanks to Gordon for helping me with this engine rebuild, sending me last minute parts, and making this sweet kit without charging more than cost!!  Thanks for all your help and advice Gordon.

All Ready to chop:

You asked your wife to help you take out an engine!!!!! wow.

Kevin, I'm very, very pleased that you're pleased!! Yours is the first I've seen done other than mine (prototype) and man, he did us both proud with the welding and fitting. Really nice Kevin. Any top end work will be a few bolts away from now on.

Thanks for the kind words - now quit!! I've only lost about $300 so far - can't stand much more...

I've enjoyed the challenge and am looking forward to seeing some of these other kits installed. Mike, Jerry, Fred, Seaweb, Terry, Ted x 2 ?

Regards,
gordon

 ;D ;D ;D ;D
Thought this would be as good a place as any to resurect this topic.
Here it is....7 years later and I'm still sitting on my frame kit! I'm ready to do this now because my pucks are probably at the point where they will start leaking instead of weeping. I also am itchin' at the trigger to polish my valve cover. I haven't consulted any welders yet and I don't know of any so my thinking is I should take it to an established shop in my area. I wouldn't want some flunky screwing it up even though it looks like a straightforward type of a welding job. I know a lot of you guys do your own welding but I don't so will have to farm that job out. Anyone here could tell me roughly what it should cost for that job? Has anyone had a mobile welder come to you and do it? I just found 3 of them in the yellow pages from this area so will call around tomorrow.

I had one tig welded in by a pro and if I remember correctly it cost $200.  Prices vary by region too.  It is worth paying for a good job.
