Bathtub in a box hits biker
« on: April 08, 2007, 05:02:42 AM »
Yea, watch out for stuff coming off of the back of pickup trucks.
A fellow didn't tie down his new bathtub and it slid out the
back of his truck on the interstate and a biker got hit.

I also know a fellow that hit a ladder on the interstate on his harley.
Seems his friend in front ran over it while it was lying flat which
stood it up on edge for the next rider. He t boned it.
But luckly kept his bike up after heading from one side or the
road to the other several times.

It's a warzone out there, so be careful!!!

I remember reading a story somewhere than an 18-wheeler ran over a brick and the brick got stuck between two of the rear tires on the rear axle.  When it finally came lose, it shot out of the tires as if coming out of a cannon.

Lots of hazards out there, some that we will never see or even think about, but regardless, keep your wits about you and always be aware of your surroundings.

I will never forget the day I was going south on the I-5 above LA.  I was behind a 3 axle dump truck.  The large U-bolts that attach the rear axle to the leaf springs were loose :o  The axle was bouncing around :o :o  I quickley passed the truck.

Riding behind a truck is dangerous as I found out....one of the truck tires blew at 70mph and tire debris went everywhere., I was 2-up at the time and had to make some quick swerves to miss all those tire pieces...watch out! The trucker did stop and made sure I and my bike were ok...

cheers

I was approaching a drop box hauler on the freeway as a mattress sized piece of card board floated out and landed on the road, I slowed way down and gave the truck a chance to finish losing load without me behind him.
I farted and made my son cry.

It's not just while we are on our bikes we have to beware :(

I was once following a guy towing a trailer loaded with crap, a piece of thin plywood about 12" square came flying off the trailer like a frisbee, and hit the front of my subaru with such force that it punctured the rad, the intercooler rad, and the oil cooler :o Fortunately I remembered to note the guy's number plate, and managed to get the damage paid for by his insurance company :)

I dread to think what would have happened if I'd been on the bike that day :(

Yikes.  That reminds me of one time I was on the highway with a crappy old junker of a pickup truck in front of me.  Suddenly his tailgate fell off!  Luckily we were on a right handed curve so it slid into the median, otherwise I would have ran over it.

Had an incident recently driving a work car - at about 100kph the car in front flicked up a piece of steel side moulding lying on the road. Was about 1metre long. It hit the front of my car, but I didn't see it in the mirror come out from behind. So later on pulled over and there it was sticking out of the plastic front bumper like a spear - looked like something out of Mad Max.
Point of telling this story - glad I wasn't on my bike that day! :o

A couple of years ago I was driving in my Camaro and the truck in front of me had a tarp covering the tree debris. The tarp tore loose and floated towards me. I am embarrassed to say this but I was transfixed by this tarp and hit the brakes too late, the tarp hit the nose and covered most of the car. I stood on the brakes and when I finally got to the side of the road, the guy who was driving behind me couldn't stop laughing. He said it looked so weird, wrapping my car like it did, and when I locked up the brakes, I guess I had the wheel turned because he said I must have done at least a dozen 360's before I came to a stop. I was just amazed I didn't go of the shoulder, it was about a 200 foot slope. I must have sat there for an hour before I got the shaking stopped. The CHP who stayed with me kept asking if I wanted to go to the hospital for shock but I just said it'll wear off. I think I smoked most of two packs in that hour, lol. I found out later from a good friend of mine who works CHP in Marin that my story was told all over Northern California. Kevin said that when he heard the story, he turned to Bil, his partner at the time, and bet him $20 it was me, Bill was pissed when I saw him the next day and told him. Kevin told Bill that he had known me for about four years at that point and knew it was me because of some of the weird #$%* that has happened around me in the past and with my weird luck, it just had to be me. This is one I'll never live down.

Let me guess, the driver of the truck did not notice nor pulled over later.

They never seem to notice! If I have a load, I always watch it. I have never had anything fly out. But some people just are not careful.

Over the last 6 years I have put right at 200,000 miles on my car for work, you would be shocked and amazed at some of the crap I have seen, had a Cessna land on the hi way about a half mile in front of me one time ,thepilot had miscaulated his fuel consumption and to make a emergency landing, see ladders in the road all time, been hit by more rocks and other crap that 18 wheelers kick up and have even seen a few girls doing the oral pleasure thing for there boyfriend.
so just be careful out there ,never no what the other guy is up to.

Well if both parties happened to be blonde, that thought probably wouldn't occur to them either ;D

This topic is scary.

Years ago I was returning home from evening classes in college in rush hour traffic. There was a large box truck ahead of me with his gate up. He was hauling two wheeled cement mixers...the kind you can put on a trailer hitch. They may look small but they weigh a ton.

Anyway, one of these comes flying out of the back of the truck. I see it careening towards me on one wheel as it veers across three lanes. I slammed on the brakes of my car. I managed to come to a stop in a cloud of dust on the shoulder of the highway and the mixer passed right in front of me and landed in the ditch.

I nearly crapped my pants.  :-\

A couple of years back a local radio personality was on his way to work in the morning when a piece of axle came flying off of an 18 wheeler. It went through his windshield and killed him instantly.

You never know when your time is up.

Happened to me heading into SF, just got ready to pass a semi, and a chunk of busted concrete whipped out from between the duals, got me just above the left eye on the helmet, ( one of the FEW times I wore a helmet out there!) almost knocked me back off the handlebars, but not off the bike,  put me in a real daze.

Had the helmet on the wall for years. big ol gouge in it.

Ken.

  edit

also, one night after leaving work, I noticed while stopping at a light, that when the guys put the ladder on the rack, they didn't tie all the way through the ladder, they only caught the bottom rungs, when I stopped the upper section slid all the way out, 40 foot ladder, hit the brakes and hear click-click-click as the top goes sliding out into the intersection.  lucky no-one was behind me so I slapped it into reverse and backed up then pushed it back and tied it right.
