Bar End Mirrors
« on: April 09, 2007, 08:19:17 PM »
Hey Cafe Racer owners! Maybe you can help me with this one. Why do I see so many cafe racers with only one mirror on the handlebar.
Is it because when you put the mirror on the throttle side the throttle sticks , jst like what happend to me today.

It could possibly be because that's the only one you really need.

I may be wrong on this one, but I think it's because in many areas the law only requires one mirror. Apparently cafe racers' devil-may-care attitude precludes the use of any safety items not required by law.  ;D ;D ;D

In TN the law requires that a motorcycle have at least one left side mounted rearview mirror.  So in my state, it's not for looks, it's for the law.  I run 2 to balance out the handlebars (so technically I run 2 for looks), and never had a problem with the throttle sticking.  But my throttle slide is also slid up onto the handlebars an extra 1/8".

And isn't the throttle side also the brake side?  The left side of the bike should be the clutch side.

If that's your bike in your avatar, the reason you can't see well with them is that they're set opposite of how they should be.  Flip them over so the fat end is pointing out.

I have two on my Ducati and only one on my CB. Basically, it was an, "Okay, right now I can only afford one, the law only requires one... one it is..." Another shall soon be bought... probably.

As for the throttle, you just have to mount it carefully. On the left hand side, you want the mirror placed as far in as you can get it (instinctually), but on the throttle side, leave it out just far enough that the mirror housing doesn't touch the twisting part of the throttle. otherwise, it might cause it to bind a little bit, or slow down in it's snap bac to closed.

Hi Gordon,

I have spun them, turned them, hit them  ;)  and still cannot get them adjusted so I can see behind me without having to do neck and back contortions.........But I am dense at times   ;) ;D

I never got the bar end mirrors to work correctly and they would interfer with the clutch/break.

So I got these.

It takes a while to get used to, but they are far superior to bar mounted mirrors once you get the hang of it.

Interesting.........never seen these before.....is the mounting pretty secure?

I like the price!

Thx,

The mounting is VERY secure. The only issue is you have to take the time to re-adjust them every time you put on your helmet.

Unlike handlebar mounted mirrors, you can see all the way around you by just turning your head a little.

However, it does take some getting used to.

would the bug eyes count as a legal rear view mirror? or would you still have to leave one on the bike...

This is from the website.

Street Legal

"BUGEYES" ARE STREET LEGAL

September 1999 - The Michigan Department of State's On-Road Equipment Inspection Form TR-54 (1-95), Unit B - Motorcycle (two or three wheel vehicles) now includes the following remarks:

Item 7 Unit B:
Does the equipment have a rearview on the left side that is adjustable?
Not required on vehicle if helmet has mirror.

As far as we know, "BUGEYES" are the only helmet mirrors suitable for this purpose.

I'm sure local laws are going to vary.

Hercules,

I have CRG bar end mirrors on my 750F.  They're pricey but they work great.  Those bug eye mirrors look really trick.  For the that price I'll give them a try as well.

Got the bugeyes in and installed yesterday then went for a quick ride.   Takes a few mins to get used to them and to tweak the adjustment just right but after that they are pretty nice.   Just glance to either side and you get a good view of what is behind you.   The mounting adhesive seems to be very strong so I don't think falling off will be a problem.   My helmet is black so they blend in pretty well.

Two thumbs up here   ;) 8) ;D

I've got a euro cafe bar, stock controls and cheesy OEM knockoff mirrors. From the outset I couldn't see well with the mirrors and thought the dang things looked like ugly bug antennas. I put both mirrors in the vice and wanked down to create a much sharper angle in the stalk. Mirrors are now closer to bar and extend out to sides giving better field of vision. BTW, they look much better, too.

I've got the CRG knock-off's you can get on Ebay for $60 per set.  Work great. There the fixed mount one's.  No issues with seeing behind me at all.  I've have them mounted on my clip-ons.  Work good and we also put them on my Brother's Triumph Thruxton 900.
