cb450 vs cb550

looking at a cb450  and a cb550 four. cb450 is $1200 and the 550 is $2k and change.   some of what I'm looking for. fun  easy bike to ride. something that is easy to whip around in traffic and also able to be driven on the highway(75 or so, they drive fast in Florida). this will also be my first bike i own. i have ridden dirt bikes and street bikes before just never owned one. i am a mechanic so any of those issues wont be a problem. is the extra 100cc's and two cylinders worth the extra grand? any recommendations on a better bike for me. they both seem to be good bikes.  thanks

In my opinion if you are going to get a 550 you might as well get yourself a CB750. I have rode a CB550 and it had the same feel as my 750 with less power. I whip my 750 in and out of traffic with no issues what so ever, plus it has the power to keep up with the Killer Cabbies on Lake Shore Drive ::).

I have yet to actually ride my CB450 in real life conditions, so I cant report on that. It is def. a smaller bike, and should be a blast to ride around town. Not sure I will venture out on the tollways with it, as hitting s Chicago sized pothole on that little bike might not be too fun  :-\ I will say though I am a bigger fan of how the twin powerplants look Vs. the 4's (my opinion)...

two nice bikes and a bel air, sweet. i was just reading your post last night on the 450 cafe. i like the way the twins look better also.

For that much money, the 550 better not need any work.  They can be had for a lot less.

this is the 550. the 450 is a 72. i think the 550 looks nicer 'cause of the new paint.

For highway riding, I'd go the 550 route, but I have to believe that you could find a running one for less.  It looks to be in good shape, it'll just depend on how much money you have now vs how much you will have left over for the bike you really want.

I paid $2000 for the bike you see in my profile.  Nearly perfect all original condition with 3,300 miles on it.  I would not pay over $2000 for a CB550 unless it is comparable to this.
Good point...

I paied $700 for my CB750.
It wasn't the best looking bike (wrong tank - king & queen seat), but it was all there and ran strong....

          I'd say that, since you are a mechanic and you are considering either the 450 or the 550, I'd try to take them both for a spin, check them out and decide which one will meet your needs. ;) Just my opinion. Good luck with your decision. I'm partial to both myself and maybe just a bit more towards the 450 since you are gonna be looking for a builder and get a 550 as that one. Just a thought. :)

I think the price difference is too big to be comparing these bikes. If they cost the same it would be a tough call.

If you have the 2 grand and change go for the biggest, best looking and best running machine you can find.

If you only have 12 hundred do the same, but I bet you can find a similar 550 for that much
Baja native.

i really have to disagree with proteal's assessment that the 550 and 750 feel the same, personally. i have both, and they are worlds apart to me, but then again my 550 has new steering bearings, progressive rear shocks, etc. and none of my 750's have been upgraded from stock. i'm also 5'7" and 160#, but this shouldn't make much of a difference when actually riding, and if anything the lighter weight should help. i really wish the 750 felt as nimble as the 550, but it really doesn't. when i get on the 750, i really notice how much power there is at a start compared to the 550, but the trans is clunky and doesn't feel quite as sewing-machine smooth as its little brother. if you've never ridden a 550 around in the 3000-7000 RPM range, you're missing out on the fun and can't really give an educated statement on its power. i wish it had that same snappiness through all ranges though..

as for the 450/550 comparison, it really depends on what you want. i've had a ton of 350T's, but have only ridden a 450T once. it rode well enough on the highway, but any old twin is gonna feel like a vibrating bastard compared to the smoothness of a four. the 450 didn't feel anywhere near as torquey and speedy as the 350 twins to me, but they certainly have a good reputation. if it were me (and i'm not trying to do the same thing as proteal here--you're choosing between two specific bikes..not any infinite possibilities) i'd choose a 350 twin over a 450, unless it was a 60's model. in my experience, the CV carbs can be more of a hassle to deal with when left sitting that the slide carbs in the 550, but on the other hand, they are a little easier to remove for cleaning.

i think you can find 550 for cheaper than that, especially if you are a mechanic, but i don't really know your local market.

the two things that keep getting at me are money, and i want one now. i can pull out $2000 max. i think it will be better to spend $1,000 to $1,500 and have extra for any suprise repairs that it might need. And being that it is my first bike im gonna own i figure ill go with something cheap. the vibration doesn't bother me. i like old classic vehicles better. i also  have a 65 mustang. as long as it is physically able to  get to highway speed and cruise for no more than 30-40 miles (ft. lauderale-miami) thats fine. i dont have much time to go for a roadtrip and pick-up a bike. shipping something all the way down to south florida can be expensive. seems like neither of these bikes really have any bad habbits. so unless something else comes up by the end of the weeks ill go for the 450

I would definitely hold out until you find a bike that's in great shape for under 2k. I bought my first CB last year (a 550) for $1200 and have spent more than that on upgrades, etc... These things are ADDICTIVE!

BTW, I think there's a big difference between the 750 and the 550, as does Paulages.

I test rode a 750 before I bought the 550. I like smaller physically sized bikes. The 750 I rode was really tall and top heavy. The 550 feels more balanced. Granted, I only rode one 750 for a few minutes and it could have very well just been the example I rode, but I didn't care much for it. The 550 felt more "right" to me.

What feels "right" to you can only be decided by you.

If a bike like ProTeals 450 was available for the money I spent on my 550 (not much) I would have been all over it in a second.

talked him into letting it go for 1000. the guy has it kept at a shop called long's motorcycle. THAT PLACE WAS AWSOME aparently its the oldest motorcycle shop in miami.  been there since 1938. old triumphs, an old beat up norton, old harleys, hondas very cool. kinda distracted by all the cool bikes there. anyways, the bike looks pretty good. carbs redone within the last year, no major leaks, starts nicely with no rattling or metal noises. chain and sproket looks good. side covers good no cracks, owners manual.  exhaust looks newer. gonna take it home on thursday.

only thing that grabbed my attention was a small to medium dent in the gas tank. forgot to ask about that. he said the tank was creamed. will the tank have to be redone after the dent is fixed. or what i mean is, is the lining they put on the inside of the tank flexible or did/will it crack when the dent is fixed?

        Hey guy, congratulations on finding that 550. Sound like you got a pretty decent ride there. Nice size bike with a fair amount of power and you should fell pretty comfortable with it's size too. ;) I haven't had any dealings with tank treatment stuff yet, so I can't really tell you anything about that.
