Some companies are trying to watch out for us....
« on: May 11, 2007, 06:45:10 AM »
I just got this e-mail from my insurance company and thought I'd share.  Some of these companies realize that cars may not intend to be giant wrecking balls for motorcycles, the are just not aware that we're there.

 Dear JAMES,

Now that the weather has begun to warm up, more motorcycles are sharing the roads. It's important that motorists understand that their actions affect the safety of motorcyclists. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, a motorist and motorcyclist may take different actions during driving or highway situations.

Allstate and the NHTSA offer the following tips to become more aware of motorcyclists:

Respect the motorcyclist - A motorcycle is a vehicle that has the same privileges as any other vehicle on the road. Make sure to give the motorcyclist a full lane to travel.
Watch out - Watch for motorcyclists on highways, at intersections, when they change lanes or make a turn. Clearly signal your driving intentions.
Anticipate the motorcyclist's maneuver - Road obstructions such as potholes and debris may be ignored by motorists, but can be dangerous to a motorcyclist. Prevent any evasive actions.
Allow plenty of room - Don't follow a motorcyclist too closely. Provide plenty of room for the motorcyclist to maneuver.
Drive Safely!

Nice to see a company at least making the attempt to educate its car-driving customers. And if 1% of them pay attention we're that much further ahead.

Here in BC May is 'Motorcycle Awareness Month' and the provincial insurance provider, ICBC, does marketing to try to wake up four wheeler drivers to the fact that we are emerging on to the roads after the annual winter lay-up.

I would say "some companies are trying that their subscribers don't run over motorcyclists so them -the companies- don't have to pay big amounts of money to cover medical expenses, vehicle damages or death compensation".

If it was just for the motorcyclist' life, insurance companies would not even spend the envelope and stamp money. If it's to help them save money in the long term, it's money well spent.

I didn't say anything about motive.  Personally I don't care why they are trying to educate (to even some small degree) the average driver.  The fact that they do anything that could potentially help out is better than I thought was happening.

Very true. Even when their intention is not purely altruist, at least will help some car drivers to realize there are some other users of the road to look for.

Quite right, Raul. For those of us that ride in 'seasonal' parts of the world it's almost as if some four wheelers have forgotten over the winter that motorcycles exist. anything anyone can do to wake them up is a good thing.

Here in BC May is 'Motorcycle Awareness Month'

Here in Amsterdam it's "Motorcycles; run them all down month".

I had two near accidents these last weeks. One guy plainly tried to run me over, I ended up in the grass next to the road to avoid getting hit. The other guy missed me by an inch and claimed it wasn't his fault because he "didn't even see me coming"

Yep, I had two idiots try to kill me in tandem today on the interstate.  One tailgating me at high speed in the left lane, then the other decides to drag race me from the right lane so that I can't get over and out of the way of the idiot behind me in the left lane.  Good thing our bikes can out-accelerate most cars, even at high speeds.

Is there a target on my back?   ::)
