I just got this e-mail from my insurance company and thought I'd share. Some of these companies realize that cars may not intend to be giant wrecking balls for motorcycles, the are just not aware that we're there.
Dear JAMES,
Now that the weather has begun to warm up, more motorcycles are sharing the roads. It's important that motorists understand that their actions affect the safety of motorcyclists. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, a motorist and motorcyclist may take different actions during driving or highway situations.
Allstate and the NHTSA offer the following tips to become more aware of motorcyclists:
Respect the motorcyclist - A motorcycle is a vehicle that has the same privileges as any other vehicle on the road. Make sure to give the motorcyclist a full lane to travel.
Watch out - Watch for motorcyclists on highways, at intersections, when they change lanes or make a turn. Clearly signal your driving intentions.
Anticipate the motorcyclist's maneuver - Road obstructions such as potholes and debris may be ignored by motorists, but can be dangerous to a motorcyclist. Prevent any evasive actions.
Allow plenty of room - Don't follow a motorcyclist too closely. Provide plenty of room for the motorcyclist to maneuver.
Drive Safely!
