gas tank restoration
« on: April 10, 2007, 11:07:18 PM »
I just found an alternate approach to going through all the hassles with chemicals, etc to restoring my tanks. Someone suggested this awhile back and I remembered to look into it.

There is a local radiator repair shop here in town that I called. I asked if they dip mc tanks and he quickly replied yes. He has done many of them. For only $75 he will dip the tank (removing all rust from inside the tank...and hopefully the paint on the outside of the tank too!) and then seal the inside to prevent any future rust. I have to leave it with him 3 days but that's no problem.

$75? A no brainer!

As soon as I get this done I will follow up in here with pics etc.

I sent a tnk to a place in PA; Eleizabth Rdiator in Elizabeth PA.  He coats it with aircraft schmutz that stays somewhat pliant.  Works good so far...  (get back to me in 10 or 20 years)
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I had mine done at the same place in 2003 for $35. Still looks good. The guy told me he does more MC tanks than radiators. I live only a few miles  north of Elizabeth.

Hi Ernie and Keiths -
When you did your tanks, I am assuming you only had the inside rust removed and then sealed?  I just removed my tank to rebuild a leaking petcock, and want to remove the small amount of surface rust on the inside.  The outside of the tank is like new.  I didn't really want to fool with removing the rust and sealing it myself if I could find a place that specializes in it..

I couldn't find anyone in my area that specialized in gas tank restoration - But I guess I should try some radiator shops? - Same thing?
Thanks.  Jeff

Jeff,
Yes, mine was just the inside. It looked pretty bad inside, since it had set with gas in it for 25 years.
