changing main seal
« on: April 10, 2007, 04:49:32 PM »
well I was pokin around the bike today dreaming of the day I fire it up, and I opted to remove the alt cover to see how much rust is on everything, as expected i'll have to wire wheel both parts of the alternator, but there was also a bit of oil in there, so I am presuming the main seal is leaking.  Now i ask, how tough is it to go thu the engine and change all the seals? I don't plan on splitting the case.

On a funny note, there are no bolts holding the front of the engine on! :o

If you've got a CB750, there's no seal on the alternator side, so oil in there is perfectly normal.

Now if it's a 550 on the other hand.... :(

Yea well uh sorry, but like Jonesy is trying politely to tell you, if it's a 500/550 the two crank seals have a perimeter lip that fits in a groove in the crankcases so the cases need to be split for those two. The others you can sneek out and replace.

Must be a 750, huh

I didn't elaborate as I thought he had a 750, but I wasn't 100% certain and he didn't say what bike... :P

Actually there is a seal on the rotor side. It's on the large gear the starter motor drives. At least there's one on my '69/'70 motor and one shown in the parts book. It stops the oil from the end of the crankshaft coming in I suppose. Part number 91215-300-003 to be precise.
Cheers,
Cliff.
