Stainless Cherry Bomb on MAC???
« on: April 11, 2007, 07:03:39 PM »
Just got in a used MAC 4 into 1 header from eBay, with megaphone, insert, flanges, etc...   ::)

I don't like the megaphone...   >:(

Who's tried a stainless sausage shaped Cherry Bomb style muffler on a MAC 2 1/2" header??

I found one on eBay; an OBX I think it was, in 14" or 16"...that's kind of short...the MAC megaphone is 21"...

Anyone have any ideas on where to look??

Thankyouverymuch!...   ;D

I saw that SAME muffler on ebay and was thinking the same thing.  I'm going to look into mufflers hopefully this weekend if I find anything interesting I'll let you know

Yo rich

your old welding buddy here

my set up is a mac too but with a V&H race only slip on

it slides right one too

All I did was drill out the rivets for the out side of the can

to rotate the V&H logo and then re-drilled it

gives it a little turned in look too at the end of the can

The outlet angle on a V&H is also adjustable.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

I was going to use one of these.  Its a Hooker exhaust tip with a resonator on my MAC 550 header.

2-1/2'' Inlet, 3-1/2'' Outlet, 10'' Long

Its as close to a Carpy style tip as I can find and its around 30 bucks.

I really like the look of your exhaust with that Slip-on..
So - How does it sound ? Is it as loud as an un-baffeled stock Cannon (ones that come with the MAC 4 into 1 ?)

I've thought about that as well. I have the Mac 4 into 1 on my 550, same as you. I'm just worried about it being too loud. I want it to sound good but not obnoxious.

I cant see that tip being any louder than an un-baffeled stock MAC cannon..
It will prob. have a higher pitch as it is shorter than the stock can.
Bigger can = different tone/pitch

The Mac on mine is unbaffeled, and I frankly find it too loud. It's not terrible for me when I'm going down the road, but in my neighborhood while it's idling it's just a bit annoying. I also find the Mac cannon to be nothing short of fugly, so my thought was to lop the cannon off, put the hooker thing on and cram a baffle in the midpipe. Not sure how it'd work though.

Thats exactly what I plan on doing.  Get that tip and goto Pep Boys and get a baffle and shove it in the midpipe.  Might have to experiment for noise levels but if its no TOO loud I can deal with it.  Heck TOO loud might be alittle fun :)

Any idea when you plan on doing it? I'd love to know how it went for someone else before I have a go at it.

I am right their with ya.
The more and more I look at my CB750 the more I wanna take a sawzall to that cannon.
My deal is I LOVE the sound of my bike as it sits, and don't want to mess with it. If I cut the cannon down some (make it shorter) the sound/pitch is going to change, which I don't want. My original plan was to take the stock can and move/point it more upright to get the look like BIG-JIM has on his bike. But, no matter how the stock can is mounted it still looks like ass..

What to do - what to do  ::)

I'm sure you'll come up with something. Everything else you've done with your two bikes have some out nicely... no reason why the pipes won't end up right.

I've grown accustomed to the sweet sounds of the sporting v-twins (after having a 98 Superhawk for 7 years), so I'm not entirely big on the 4 cyl sound in general. Mine right now sounds like a wailing bumblebee when it hits the powerband. I like it and don't care for it at the same time.

But man, the Mac pipes are so bloody ugly, a sawzall can only improve the looks!

Thanks for the kinds words bud, they are appreciated...

Once the CB450 is up and running under it's own power I am gonna focus on "cleaning up" some areas on the CB750 like the front-end, and the exhaust situation. I had a idea of getting a used superbike can and gutting it to see how it might sound, then I had a thought of just cutting down the stock cannon to kinda look like STEVEF's setup (his bike sounds wicked at high RPM's). Or I was thinking about just running the header by itself with NO cannon and call it a day..

Who knows..

Jeff, I won't be doing this for another month or so.  My wife and I just bought our first house and we close on May 1st.  So after that I'll finally have an uncluttered garage to work in.  I love the MAC header looks but can't stand that huge heavy cannon that comes with it.

any how-to as for baffle removal?  I don't feel like messing stuff up with my bike. :-X

edit: I know it's hard to screw up a muffler, but I'm a noob.

I'm thinking of taking the muffler off for kicks once it's fully operational, but I'm interested in STEVEFs setup.. need pics!
