piston ring order.....
« on: April 11, 2007, 01:17:46 PM »
Fresh piston rings landed on my desk and am ready to assemble. can anyone confirm that the order/direction I am putting them is fine?
Was expected to see a "top" marking on the rings but these original honda rings didn't have them, only a "R" and 75 (for .75mm oversize) on the same side,  so just making sure

this is the order they were inside the package:

top ring: grey color - direction does not seem to matter as both edges look the same
second ring - dull chrome finish - with little chamfer facing down
oil rings - no doubts here

can anyone confirm or correct?

Thanks
TG

Should be a 'R' stamped on the top side.

Thanks, yeah that R.
so question narrows to: grey ring first (on top) , chromed ring second or the other way around?

I thought the chromed ring was the compression, but I could be wrong.

There I said it, let the confusion continue. :-\

Chrome ring is the top one with the chamfer at the top facing the combstion chamber.

Second ring anyway up unless marked.

This is only from memory, can confirm tomorow.

thanks Sam & all

checked myself the manual again and again and the only thing mentioned is "marks towards top" but no mentioning of different rings. both are for compression by the way.

Sounds like the chromed should indeed be the first, it's just that in all the four packages the rings where in the same order within the box, gray one first, chrome ring second and then oil rings. that put me in doubt.

cheers

Packaging means nothing! ALL marks go upwards, chromed ring in top, plain steel in second
