Cheap Koito H4 Headlamp
« on: February 19, 2025, 04:43:53 PM »
Toyota sells a retrofit kit for a couple of their older models to upgrade their sealed 7" round headlamps with ones that have replaceable bulbs.

P/n:  81110-60P70

For under $20 I got TWO 7" H4 Koito headlamps (w/12v 60/55W bulbs), zipties, dielectric grease (weirdly creamy?), wiring harness, relays, fuses, and instructions. Picked up in store to save on shipping and ordered on local Toyota dealership's online parts store.

Reflectors are all glass and feel high quality but they stick out a bit (a lot) from the headlight rim.

The harness has 2 eye terminals to battery, 2 relays, 2 20A fuses, 2 female H4 connectors, and 1 male H4 connector. Not a great electrical guy but maybe these can be adapted to make a headlight relay for our bikes?

great find, i work at a toyota dealership so i just ordered two sets, should get all 4 headlights for less than $30, don't specifically need them at the moment but handy shelf fillers

and we just worked out my mate here at work has at least 3 old Fords that should take them so when mine turn up tomorrow he will take one pair home, if they fit then he can order another 3 pairs

That is a cool kit! I’ll try that part number with a local Toyota dealer and see if they’re available in Canada. Thanks!

The lense is probably not correct for motorcycles. Cars use a different fluting pattern in the lense and are biased to the right side(for most of us) and bike headlights put out even light to both sides of the road.

looking at the top pic they do appear to have the angled fluting on the left so thats good for me ( australia ) but i would have thought that toyota would have allowed for that in providing to different markets. i'll see tomorrow

having said that at worst it'll direct light towards oncoming traffic which is no bad thing, the d1ckheads can't say they didn't see you. the LED insert I've got now has no directional stuff on it so its equally annoying no matter where in the world you use it

Can’t test them right now but I saw some photos and they are biased right. That would be fine right just not the best in the dark? I’ll have to try it out and see.

I'm sorry, but that struck me funny. "not the best in the dark"

They might be fine when adjusted for the pattern, put one on and take it to a narrow straight blacktop road, see what lights up. My old favorite Stanley H4 didn't hold a candle (L0L!) to a similar Bosch lens. The new stuff is way better that what came on our bikes so I wouldn't reject the idea without a proper test.

That's a great find. I did a quick bit of searching & found the right hand drive version is 90981-01054 . There's a bit more detail here https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/rhd-equivalent-for-81110-60p70-head-light-kit.1307976/

As mentioned before car units dip to the side whilst motorbike one dip straight up and down, i have fitted car units in the past and the light cut off can be disconcerting in a dark country lane

The Cibie unit I use on the K3 does just that. On low beam it has a clean cut off, not to blind oncoming traffic, but still shoots a longer beam up the right hand verge. Flicked on hi beam it shoots pencil straight. Hopefully these units will do the same.

Still got a Cibie Z beam fitted to mine, upgraded to an LED bulb. The high beam looks like a laser, the low beam is awesome without dazzling oncoming traffic, low down and really bright. Even with the old Halogen bulb in it was awesome, it's even better now.

Does yours have the concave lens? I think the one I have may have been out a Cibie “Super Oscar” rally kit from the ‘70’s!

No, I seem to recall the smaller Z beam lens were concave, like the 400-4 one, mine is a normal shape, same as the pictured above but the lens is much thinner.

Saw 2 Z beams for sale the other week on Ebay, wanted something like £600 for the pair.  :o :o

Convex is the outie, concave is the innie, so Benelli was correct saying his innie was concave, surely?

Years back, I got a Koito headlight. Works great with halogen. I even stuffed an hid bulb in it. With the cutdown in the lens, it worked very well. Didn't have a problem with blinding oncoming traffic.

Surely, you can get a picture of this “concave” headlight for me. The one he was asking you about or his in his picture..?

I’ve never seen a “concave” headlight…just flat or convex…?

Ive seen slightly concave H4 type on cars, must be to do with focus?and convex and flat,$20 is a super deal on those Id go for it if I needed one,or two!Ive bought a coupla these bosch units on ebay quite few years ago bought 35 bucks each,I guess for the right hand drive market as you can see a sort of cut off effect to the left(right in the photo) in the prismatic or what ever the #$%* it is focus triangular bit, these are clearly marked as motorcycle,I dont ride at night but like to have a decent headlight anyway, last time i rode at night was bout 12 years ago and this headlight with a H4 was fine.

Cibie “Super Oscar” concave rally lights. I think this is the one I’m using in the K3. When new (1970’s) these could be mounted as auxiliary lamps or fitted as a replacement for any 7” sealed beam unit. They had a spotlight version too. From memory, the lens for that one was totally clear and a single filament bulb.

Still available on EBay (for a price!).

You'll catch more insects with concave and those are rare these days. Lots of proteins too. Below my favourite.

Half a century ago I once heard that there were states in the US where not only always-headlamp-on was law for motorbikes, but also that at day the light had to alternate between high and low beam in a certain frequency. I wonder what the wiring was on such bikes, as you wouldn't want that flickering at nighttime ofcourse. I only heard it once, so... urban myth maybe?
