Topic: 500/4 K1 front fork assembly question

Taking these apart a couple months ago was pretty messy so I wasn't able to take any pics of how they came apart.  The service manual sort of skips some steps in assembly.  I have one together but just want to make sure I did it right.  Here's what I did:

- installed the seal and snap ring
- inserted the damper unit ( into lower case (6)
- installed 8mm bolt and new copper washer
- installed cushion spring seat (3)
- installed the spring
- installed lock nut (2) all the way down the threaded part of the damper
- added fork oil
- installed fork pipe (10)
- installed fork bolt (top cap) onto damper and tightened against lock nut
- screwed top cap into fork pipe

Pretty much what I did yesterday twice. Sprayed the legs gold + lacquer to make them look modern. I added the fork oil after putting the tubes in. Held tubes an inch higher than spring to pour in. Also I added a small spacer atop the spring to stiffen slightly. Did you put the spring in with the tighter coils at the top? (Does this make a difference?)

One end of the spring is tapered and I put that end in first to rest against the spring seat.

The P/L seems to show it with the tapered end at the top and the wider space coils at the bottom, but was hoping for comments on whether this mattered, but I don't think so.
