LED conversion kit diode?
« on: March 04, 2025, 02:40:08 PM »
I got an LED conversion kit from Common Motor Collective for my 1977 CB550F.

https://www.common-motor.com/honda-led-upgrade-kit-cb550-cb550k-cb550f-cb750?srsltid=AfmBOoozNQd5E2uuGHMWjuXob4Yu0oLHxZ4doWO1lPPcbbdRixlMEKRL

After swapping all the bulbs the turn signals aren't working right. The kit includes a diode for installation on a bike with a single turn signal indicator. My bike has an indicator for each side. I haven't been able to find any information on installing the diode on my bike. An electronic flasher unit came with the kit and works ok.

Before I chase anything else, does anyone know if I need to install the diode and how to do it?

The diode is only for bikes with only one indicator repeater not the one with two
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

What doesn't work right?

Signals wouldn't flash. The flasher unit that came with the kit failed.
Worked ok with incandescent bulbs and original thernal flasher. Buzzer worked also.

I took an electronic flasher off one of my other bikes and it worked but the signal lights were flickering and buzzer was intermittent. I disconnected the buzzer and the led bulbs flash normally now.

The buzzer must draw too much current and keep the flasher from working right and causing the bulbs to flicker. I had a different buzzer left over from my boat, it worked ok. The buzzer was annoying anyway so I will leave it disconnected.

Another problem I noticed is the stop/tail light barely got brighter when the brake is applied. I put a different kind of led in and it gets much brighter when brake is applied.

I spent way too much time working through this. Hopefully this will help someone out. If a CB550F has separate turn signal indicators, the diode in the kit isn't needed and the buzzer will have to be disconnected.

My recent experience with LED turn signals and flashers ended with a three wire electronic flasher from NAPA for about $17. Finally working right with the stock buzzer and diy indicator panel (2 turn indicators).  The previous 2-wire electronic flashers would only work with incandescent bulbs.  I suppose they would have worked with a load resistor, but the idea was to reduce the load!

I got an explanation from Common Motor today. They are going to send me a replacement flasher. The also verified that the buzzer causes problens and that the diode isn't needed for a bike with two turn signal indicators.

I'm ok with the leds supplied except for the stop/tail light. There isn't enough difference in brightness between the tail light and the brake light. It's a safety issue. I'm going to use a different bulb there.

I had the same concerns, then I saw the turn signal bulb display at the harley dealer.  I’m using one turn signal bulb for a standard harley housing.  It is so bright on the brake setting that I warn people not to look into it while turning on.  It will even get the attention of a soccer mom on the phone in her minivan, just before she hits you.
