It finally broke. :( Need to paint it.
« on: February 18, 2025, 05:37:38 PM »
My trusty 750K2 left-side cover finally broke (tried to remove it in 20 degree weather, bad move), so I'm up for a repaint on my steed this year.
I used these guys some 20 years ago on a Kawi 650 DOHC rebuild for someone, and while I didn't rave for the color, the paint was pretty good. Anyone have recent experience with their stuff?
https://paintforcars.com/?srsltid=AfmBOooVnEsUBLbey_sd_pbBmYphqX4b6pByw1C8ziDZCbf-lNTMOMkV

While I love the candy colors, they don't last long: in 1979 I needed a repaint on mine and the 2-part-epoxy that the guy gave my parts (in trade for my old 2nd disc caliper setup) still looks new, despite the parts underneath giving up now. It was GM's gold, almost the same tint as the basecoat for Honda's 1974 Gold Flake (without the flake).

Today, though, i don't know if these guys still make good paint? I'm looking for at least another 20 years...and I don't dote on my 750 much, we just like to ride.

Not really an answer but I'm a fan of finding the color you want in a similar new car color in a two-stage paint. It holds up well and resembles the candies without the drawbacks of a candy paint.
That said, my bikes only have to suit me, not a judge in a show.
Hyundai has some really brilliant color choices that appear similar to our colors. I don't want their car, but their colors are great. I'm a fan of 2013 Honda Accord tiger eye pearl brown with K2 stripes.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Do you know if the Hyundai paint is NOT water-based? Outside of Duplicolor (who doesn't seen to have the color I want) I'm not finding very many colors in durable paints. The 2-part epoxy on it now has been absolutely amazing, considering all that I threw at it since 1979 (and still looks great now!). I think if I can find someone who can match the tank and side covers I have now with just new side covers, I'd be a happy camper again. The color is the same tint as the Gold Candy of the day, but not in Candy (i.e. the 'depth' is not there, but the tint is). It has held up at least as well as the Imron on the Vetter, and that's saying something special...

I used aerosol cans from here on both my bikes, but they were candy colors.

https://www.66autocolor.com/

They have other paints as well.  I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the spray nozzles on the cans.

That looks like the old House of Kolor guys: I thought they went out of business a while back. Maybe someone re-opened them?

I sent them a chunk of my side cover to match the paint. I'll post how it all comes out in the end. I suspect the side covers (with new paint) will outshine the tank, but that's OK with me. After 50+ years of using tank bags on trips, my tanks never look show-quality. I gotta say, though, that 2-part epoxy paint has been TOUGH paint to put up with what I've done to it!

Not a motorcycle but my Acty was painted with Pittsburgh auto paint  in 2012 Mini Cooper British Racing Green, I like green. Paint is pretty tough, has a clear coat over it.
The photo is when I was doing something under the front bumper, fixing the horn I believe.

Ah, British Racing Green: that brings back memories of a certain MGB in my college days... :D
It didn't have clearcoat, though!

Being honest all BL cars came with original rust but then they still seem to be about for rebuild!

You can buy all of the repair panels with many parts made on original tooling. Complete interiors are also available plus a large aftermarket parts supply. They were even selling complete bodys for both the GT and the roadster. The drivetrain is very robust and reliable. They are really fun to drive especially when you live out in the country. 8)

The one memory that stands out about the MG was the 2nd gear. The 1st wasn't synchro, but the rest were, and it was tricky if you tried to start from a stop in 2nd, but if it was rolling at all, 2nd had enough torque and RPM to drive all over town in that one gear. The tach didn't work right, so I've no idea of what the redline was, nor if it ever got there. College cars were like that, back when we hadn't landed on the moon yet.

Oh, MAN! You had the blue one?
I wanted that one soooo badly...never have been able to get one. I have not seen any of the 'replica' paints that match the color, or I would have painted my K2 - because I have (and use as daily riders) the Brooks roadrace leathers they dyed in...Honda Blue-Green. So, I have never matched my own bike. :(
