Current state of my 500/4 resto and a few questions
« on: March 16, 2025, 08:34:18 AM »
Got this ‘72 mostly complete but very crusty.  Doing a full restoration on it.  Have a few questions as I start reassembling.

1.  The generator harness and starter motor lead come out through the left side cover.  I’m not sure if the wires come out through the small cutout in the case or out the back of the side cover and over the spacer on the upper rear engine mount bolt.  Blue arrow in the photo.  If they come out the side cover, what is the purpose of this cutout?

2.  Looking for some pictures of how the plug wires are routed.  Not sure if I have the two plug wire clips in the right place and what wires go there.

3.  There are two M6 nuts internally in the frame just below the coils on the right side.  Any idea what goes here?

4. Finally, I have this piece that the parts diagram identifies as ignition coil wire protector, part number 50400-323-000.  Looking for how this is mounted and what coil wires go there.

Thanks.

The wires should go through the curved slot in crankcase top, not sure on plug wires never looked just routed them, cant remember what bolts in thos holes and that protector is always a discussion
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

On my 500 with only 4000 miles on it and looks factory the generator wires + neutral and oil pressure came out the slot and the starter cable just out the back and over the spacer. It's a squeeze with the lot in the cutout, but I have done it on one of my other bikes but worry about chafing the starter cable.
There are clips on the outermost screws on the top cover and cables for 1 and 4 go through them.
Think there should be a green earth lead with ring terminal that goes near coils, not sure. Be sure there is a good earth to frame here.

My book should come out this week: it has lots and lots of pictures of how to put them back together.
