I would follow the paint manufacture's directions on how long to wait between coats.  It usually is just minutes ranging from 10 mins to 30 mins or so.
No prep should be required between coats as long as you don't wait too long.

Usually 30 minutes and no longer than 24 hours.
Find the tech sheets for the base and the Candy Gold Midcoat. follow the directions to the letter.
This is a three stage paint job with Clearcoat on top of the Midcoat.

 Hang your parts in good light, where you can see them like they would be on the bike. Any extra tint will make darker areas.  Like paint the airbox near the side covers.

It is a 3-step process, came in rattle-cans, with a trick hi-gloss topcoat in an even more trick 2-part-mix-in-one-can that I've not seen before. They have been good to work with and I'll return to them for my next bike's paint (CB350F project in Red). I asked them to match the 50+ year-old gold paint on my 750 by sending them a piece of the [crumbling] side covers, and they did it! It's a nice match, and after I apply the clearcoat (once it stops this 4-day snowstorm) I'll be posting pix. They care about the match.

Are you using a 2k clear?

Yep, that's what they call it: I haven't used it before.
I used a LOT of kits from CT70 Paints when he was doing it, but that's gone (I think he died?).
I'm also about to try to use the VMR paints, but from a touchup gun(s). It is a 4-layer paint for Candy Gold finish with 5th layer for the black side panels (CB550) on the tank. We just haven't had painting weather here much, lately.

That’s the way I was taught..Have them hanging like their going to be on the car or what you’re paint..😁
Use the right temperature reducers for your conditions and such and follow tech sheet as already posted..
I’m not sure rattle can clear coat without an activator will fair well with gasoline spills..
ImRon has an activated clear coat in a rattle can for airplanes and boats that’s up to the task. Use proper PPE
with ImRon or other quality urethanes, etch…., don’t want no blind pups..

Quick question on the tank.  The inner portion is black.  Did this come from the factory as non-metallic?  My tank did not appear to have any flake but it was badly faded.

Just my two cents, but I've used SprayMax 2K Clear in a rattle can for a clear coat, it hardens up really well. A little pricey, but worth it.  Has anybody used KustomCans rattle cans?

I think the "wings" on each side of the tank was just a gloss black with no metallic.

Paint was junk IMO but what do you expect for the price. Would not recommend it. I'm repainting it but don't want to drop hundreds on paint. Any cost effective recommendations? Thanks

66autocolor as mentioned above comes in aerosol cans and works great, I've used them twice with good results.

See my post in 'What Did You Do To Your Bike Today"...I used Rustoleum Semi-Gloss for the black w/ no clear, Rustoleum Primer-Sealer for the base coat, Krylon Glitter Blast for the silver color coat, KustomCans Candy Orange for the color coat and SprayMax 2K Clear for the top coat. I'm very impressed with the KustomCans - the 12 oz. candy coat (one can!) lasted long enough for both side covers, the tank and even doing the underside of the tank with multiple coats . The Glitter Blast Silver lasted long enough to do all the sides and the tank before I used the candy, and it came out very close to the OEM Flake Sunrise Orange. Just my two cents. The SprayMax 2K Clear really made it pop! I'm adding the white two-stripe pinstriping after it dries.

Well, my cheap paint is becoming very expensive. Lol Nothing new there I guess.
Since I'm only painting the tank, matching has been difficult. Also finding that you not only need to match the color but also the amount of flake. The flake on the rest of the bike seems greatly reduced. The last paint combo (Krylon/Kustom) proved to be the wrong color for what I have and way too much flake.
Next stop is 66 Auto Color. Wondering if a picture would give them some help in the matching process. Also, how would you reduce the amount of flake? Is the amount of flake driven by the silver, color coat or both? If I add more coats to darken the color, will I also be increasing the flake? Never painted Candy before. It's tricky especially when you are trying to match.
Fortunately, retirement has given me the time to fix my screw ups!
