Final Generation of Billet blocks??
« on: April 06, 2025, 02:17:33 PM »
I was with my good friend machinist who performed the work on my billet blocks. He is retired but has the equipment to make a final run of blocks.....and I do mean final. Biggest problem is the lb price of billet aluminum has doubled since the last batch...all other costs have held. I wouldn't mind doing 10 or possibly 12 but I need financial commitment....not spiritual commitment....that doesn't pay the bills. This is a once in a lifetime offer.....I won't be coming around with it again. You let me know know fellas and I'd even entertain selling one to Terry at this point. ;)

Seeing him this Tuesday fella's....I'll PM you. I wasn't thinking of this but a very, very, very good friend of mine and my machinist's partner was involved in a very serious head on car crash several days ago . We talked about this on the road to the ICU at Beth Israel...
Anyway....for a number of reasons I'm up for it.

Custom bore and deck heights or are they all standardize for machining..?

If the bore is 71.25mm will there be a piston and ring run..?

Is that including the recent increases?

Please include me in the price PM's when numbers are finalized. Dang, I guess the price of everything is going up now.

You can go to 72mm or smaller. Custom specs have been done in past....no reason they can't be done now. ;)

Spoke with my machinist today and he should have the material cost tomorrow. He was told by his supplier to be sitting down when he gets the price. That being said he is a frugal man so I take that with a grain of salt. ;) ;D

I’ll do another..😇

Got one still on the shelf getting lonely..
I’ll let you know the bore size after I do some OEM
piston and ring size research.

I don’t think the XA rings have enough tension to
adequately scrape a good 20w-50 oil off. May be ok
for a water cooled low viscosity application. My experience
with any low tension oil ring and higher viscosity oils = an oil burner..
The 2nd ring is low tension in the XA ring pack also, as I’ve read on wiseco’s site..

They might be ok in a Toyota specing 0w-20 like my wife’s crossover.
But I not going to try to reinvent the wheel in an aircooled application
where a heavier oil can be beneficial on a summer day..

Thanks and I appreciate this billet opportunity 😁

Hoping you follow up with Keith’s RIP billet head plans..
A 38+mm intakes with a rolled valve angle with roller tip rockers..
Whoops daydreaming again..

Thanks again for the opportunity…😇

I do have a few questions when you have time regarding the types of cam chain sliders that can be used..
MeesoMoto and Kenny has some more modern ones that come to mind…

I was a big proponent of XA rings but after installing about a dozen engines using them I am back to XC or XG ring sets. Rolling the oil rails is very common with "conventional" assembly. Modern engines that have the pistons going in from the top aren't a real problem as you use a ring compressor. I recommend installing the rod/piston assembly into an upside down cylinder using a compressor and than installing the cylinder on the upper case.
XA rings use more oil but I haven't had a real problem. It happens with water or air cooled especially if they are road raced.
Keith's head design would be doable if I got my hands on the CAD but it would be really expensive as it requires manufactured rocker arms and other stuff. Valve sizes were 41 intake, 34 exhaust. If you put in 75mm pistons we thought maybe 180 HP. Big ideas. ::) ;D

Did you ask for quotes on 1, 100, and 1,000 qty ?? Motion Raceworks has all of the machinery needed to make this part I bet from what I see in their videos.

What would you guess a good price quote would be for 1000 units? Even at only $100 per part, which is probably less than the cost of each billet, you're looking at an investment of $100,000. ::)
