Adding LED's to blinkers for custom brake lights
« on: November 06, 2007, 07:23:55 AM »
OK, I'm really picky on how I want my bike to look. I have spent months looking at different brake light options on my bike and hated them all. So last night I went to the local auto parts store and purchased some red LED's and decided to make my own. I bought some cool LED blinkers on e bay and decided to incorporate the red LED's into the housing. Here are some self explanatory pictures I thought Id share.

Sorry about the messy desk. When I routed the wires through the hallow post, I connected the 2 red LEDs inside the housing since there wasn't enough room to run them all through. These LEDs are SUPER bright. I had a hard time taking a picture of them without them freaking the camera out.

Since the current is less, did you use a different flasher relay? I wanted to use LEDs and the guy at the Auto parts place told me that.

For the LED's to work properly with the TS's, you will probably need to upgrade to an electronic flasher unit.  Because it does not rely on temperature increases from the current in the wires, the electronic unit will flash consistantly even when your bike is at idle.  I did it on my '76 Goldwing, and it works great.

I actually wired a small light bulb in where the flasher buzzer use to be and mounted it under the tank after I wrapped it in black tape. I tried and electronic flasher but it did not work for me. Was there a specific flasher you used? I bought a 2 terminal electronic flasher and no luck.

It should work - I used one that I picked up from NAPA, but I am not near the bikes to check.

There is a specific relay to use.  Its not the two prong, its a 3 I believe.  Also, its the one w/ numbers (33, 45 I think, off memory), not letters.  The 2 prong electronic acts like a mechanical.  Geeto has a good post on this.
