Scary Clouds
« on: April 11, 2007, 11:57:20 PM »
Had sum wild lookin clouds in the sky today. Reminded me of the ones we had a few years ago. I attached pictures of those. The term given to them was Scary Ass Clouds by the meterological society. Everyone was looking up just waiting to see where the tornado was going to drop from, but they just blew over.. Weird

being from kansas i can honestly say... i don't think you are in kansas anymore.  the only ones that look slightly familiar is the next to last one.  that first set is incredible.  they don't seem to be individual clouds which is the odd part.

glad you survived those.

What a great site this is!  Those pics are so other-worldly I would have thought they could only have been computer generated for an apocalyptic- Armageddon type movie.  Thanks guys-those are fabulous

I guess that clears up where the name 'mammatus' comes from.   ;D  That's some nice cleavage.

We used to get clouds like that when I lived in central Texas, and that usually meant it was time to start looking for a safe spot to hide from a tornado! :o  It was especially creepy when they were green and accompanied by an erie calm.

it is almost as if you are looking up through (or at in this case) the service of  the ocean.  the clouds seem to be in wave formation more than cloud formation?

Andy, please don't take offense, but the Hurricane Katrina pictures are a hoax. These circulated around my office as well.  Seems they're actually pictures of tornadoes in Kansas.

i was thinking the same thing, hurricaines can only form over water and it doesnt look like water for miles in the pics, Still great pics though

They're actually "supercells" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercell) which often form tornadoes.

Very cool pics though.

Great pictures. Just had family come by to visit and we were talking about
thunder storms and lightening both of which I like to see and try to photograph.
I use to stand out there with a camera and hold the shutter open to try and catch
some nice lightening strikes. Now with a digital camera on record it will be easy.
You have given me some inspiration for pictures this summer.

Take it easy out there in that!

Really nice pictures.
Around here the only wierd things I see in the sky are
A10 and F16 airplanes buzzing the hills doing straffing runs
on wild deer and CB750s on curvy Vermont roads. ;D
