O Ring source for fuel use-petcock-CB550K
« on: April 23, 2025, 03:55:06 PM »
My 550 fuel petcock started leaking around the handle, so I ordered a new petcock from 4into1.  Not my regular vendor choice but the only one I could find.

Guess what, the new one leaks in the same area.

I took my old one apart, simple device.  It has a 2mm X 19mm o ring behind the petcock handle that swivels from on/off/res.  I assume that is the reason it is leaking.

Online I found the oringstore and put in an order for 2mm X 19mm, 2.5mm X 19mm and 2.4mm x 18.6mm.  These were the closest that I could find, will decide which one to use if I ever get them, they are back ordered.

Does anyone have a good source for metric o rings?

Honda sells a petcock rebuild kit for those bikes, if it has the OEM petcock: #16952-341-671

(Also in Chapter IV, Page 13. :D ).
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

I'll check my new book  ;)

But looking at SSH parts fiche, it indicates the body and the whole petcock is no longer available, and you cannot buy a rebuild kit for the body.

Part #4 highlighted in pic., with the o ring I need in yellow.

I found a kit on eBay:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/226233476688

It might be discontinued again, but there's a zillion of them out there. With Honda's parts, whenever the last 3 digits become -670 (or nearly anything "6xx") it indicates that Honda has stopped stocking it (again) and it has been turned out to the vendors who made it for them. This is when we can often find them "out there", just not at Honda's dealers.

I think this petcock kit has been on-off for years. ;)

Hmm..those are the only seals in the petcock: the rest of the body is a valve. If the valve itself is leaking, the whole petcock must be replaced, which must be where you started?

The Zamac body and spigot (the part with the lever on it) was cast and made as one unit. Then the other seals were added, going up to the tank. MTBE ate at the Zamac during those years when it was in our gasolines, making the surfaces irregular and not smooth and straight. Then, yeah, they weep fuel afterwards.

Then you ARE stuck with finding a new petcock. :(

Our modern fuels are not a lot better: this is why I advocate for adding some oil to the fuel, which helps a lot to neutralize the non-gasoline effects on the metals. Just one example from Denver, CO: there is butane (or was, from October 1 until March 31 and then however long it takes to deplete the gas station's tanks) in our fuel now, and it dries out and cracks any rubber line in the fuel system. Then, as soon as it moves for any reason, it weeps gas, with the usual results, fires, etc. So, I have ceased riding my own 750 between those dates, as I got tired of replacing the fuel hoses every stinking year because of it. Oil in the gas greatly reduces the effect, but it still removes the flexibility from the hose itself in just one season, turning them into a soft plastic that breaks when flexed 180 degrees.

Maybe this?

That's it, just purchased.  Thanks CycleRanger!

You're welcome. Pictures were helpful! I hope that cures your issue.
That petcock reminds me a lot like the ones on my XS650 with that cone-shaped stopper, for which kits are available.
I wonder if the o-ring is the same size.

Ah, I see: does the 2x18mm size fit that face seal? If it does, I'll order up a batch of them at Rocket so we can get them without spending $20 each for them.

What octane or type of fuel do you recommend running? (Book arrives Friday btw) I have access to pretty much all types here in Northern Kentucky including ethanol free, E85, U88 (E15). I would assume ethanol free, but I am unsure.
Stupider follow-up question, you recommend putting some oil in the gas to reduce degradation of rubber fuel components, is this the same as the engine oil and what are the measurements of oil to fuel. For example, per fill up are you giving it a "snort" or "drop" or are you tracking it in detail to like 50 parts gas to 1 part oil ratio? 😂

You will need to fix those connections.

I use regular pump gas 87 octane and add 2 oz of 2 stroke oil to a tank of gas.

^^ What he said...
I use the old oil I drained from my last oil change, or else the 2-stroker oil (sometimes even the synthetic kind). Here in Colorado in particular, lots of old-time bike are getting it now as word started going 'round about it last year when we got stuck with extra butane in the gas here. It really helps, and slows down the carb's drying out over the winter, we've discovered. Nice side effect. :)

Got my o ring today from Ebay seller listed above.

Best I can tell, it measured 1.7mm x 19mm.  I put my petcock together with it, won't be able to test until next week.

When I needed a rebuild kit I couldn't find one to save my life. I bought the 4in1 version and it works great. I have my original and it would be great to rebuild it but not only does it have the Orings, the nylon washer and cone should be replaced as well. I can't find thise anywhere.

Ah, I see: does the 2x18mm size fit that face seal? If it does, I'll order up a batch of them at Rocket so we can get them without spending $20 each for them.
Nope not 18mm.
The one surviving from the K5(pre 2010)I have is
     2mm x 18.72mm ID x 21.67mm OD

I opened the petcock today that I put on the K5 in 2019, bought from South Sound.
     1.94mm x 18.49mm x 21.85mm

I picked up the ebay orings today.
They measure 1.78mm x  18.86mm ID x 22.18mm

I have the rebuilt petcock on the K5 now, testing with fresh non ethanol Sunoco 94.
10 minutes no leak so far.

Installed new o ring today in OEM petcock and installed on tank.  The o ring came from the ebay link listed previously in this thread.

So far after about 4 hours no leak.

Hmm..those numbers suggest a 2x20mm size(?). I haven't installed the petcock yet on the [book's] 550 in the garage (because the tank isn't painted yet), might see if that size will work on it (?).

I hate to see us all having to pay whole $ for O-rings when they are less than 50 cents in any quantity.
I'm a cheapskate. ;)

Mark,
The one I received from Ebay was 1.7mm x 19mm, to fit the 550 petcock.

I'll see if I can get that size, too. The local seal shop can get almost any size made if I buy 100+ of them, and then they are 50 cents or something like it. That's how I make those O-ring kits for these bike engines (which no gasket set has).
