Can't turn down high idle speed
« on: May 15, 2025, 05:39:31 PM »
I've got a '77 CB750K with 25,000 or so miles on it.  I always had problems with the bike starting on only two cylinders but the other two would come in after some warming up.  Recently I decide to do something about and pulled the carbs, cleaned then up, replaced some gaskets\o-rings.  I also replaced all the air tubes connecting carbs to the motor and air box to carbs, as well as changed out a clapped out air box for a solid one with a good recent air filter..  Bike now starts up like a champ on all cylinders.  But now I've got a new problem.  Once it warms up the idle speed won't come down below some 2,800 rpm.  The cables had been lubed in the last year, but I don't see how it can be a cable problem anyhow.  The throttle turns freely closed with no drag.  The idle speed adjuster is now out of play as I turned the screw out sufficiently that it no longer comes near to touching its seat.  I've prayed around the whole area with ether getting no reaction at all.  The pull cable pulls (throttle up) and the push cable pushes (throttle down).  The only thing left I can think of it the problem is in the bell crank the cables connect to, but I can't imagine how that would work, as the first couple of minutes of riding everything is fine.  The problem starts as the bike warms up.  Any ideas?

Sounds like a proper carb sync may help, slides in the carbs might be set to high?

Did you perchance change the tiny O-rings inside the idle-mixture screws?
If they are old and aged, and those screws and tiny washers were removed and then reinstalled, the O-rings will have shifted position, and being old and hard, are not sealing very well. This lets fuel-air mixture slip past them in an uncontrolled manner, and the 750K7/8 bikes will high-idle when this happens.

Another item that can cause this with the PD41 or PD42 carbs is a too-high fuel level (float setting) in the float bowls. This causes the same situation as described above by letting excess fuel bubble its way up the mainjet when it should not be delivering any fuel. The float level difference that causes this is about 2mm higher than the OEM setting for whichever version of those carbs you have (PD41 or PD42).

Is there free play in the pull cable when the throttle is closed? Doesn't the K7 carb assembly actually have 2 idle speed screws, one for fast idle when the choke is on, and the main one for after the motor is warmed up and the choke is off?
