SimpleGreen Purple or Green?
« on: May 18, 2025, 10:52:43 AM »
I can't remember which SimpleGreen  colour discolours and tarnishes the carbs when left too long in an ultrasonic cleaner? Is it green or purple?

The green color does.
I use the purple Simple Green HD.

The purple also leaves a very nice shine on the factory carburetor anodized coating;looks sparkly and beautiful.

Purple for sure..... I add 50% water and a generous amount of Dawn dish soap to the mix in the ultrasonic cleaner.

I just use “Simple Green Concentrate” in a spray bottle from Home Hardware Canada. Mixed with distilled water (4 parts water to 1 SG). I only leave carbs for 20-30 minutes and no issues with any colour or finish changes.

I will try Purple next time for sure.

I use green, 50/50 with water, no issues in the ultrasonic but I limited the time they were in there. I'll try the other soon, sounds interesting.

I use the Aircraft Simple Green, I never use any other kind, have not found a need for any other kind anyway.

I think FAR too many people get ideas that Simple Green is a benign substance because of the name they chose for it, overall IMHO it is pretty caustic. One other IMPORTANT point I will make is that the jugs it comes in can become so brittle that they shatter when you pick up the jug. I had that happen with one on a shelf up above my head, the jug totally came apart and the contents went all over me and the utility room, I am SO glad I did not get a faceful including my eyes.

This is the one I got. It was the only one available. I don't remember PRO HD markings on it before but I hope it's the same concentration.

#1 on the aircraft simple green. Have used it it the Ultra Sonic on carbs to no ill effect. I think it depends on how long parts are left. In the Ultra Sonic I usually do a couple of 20 minute cycles.

Simple Green - SMP13406 Extreme Aircraft and Precision Cleaner

This is what I was referring to, and I think Mike too. Not readily avail cash carry so far as I have seen. I just keep an unopened gallon in reserve and will order more from Amazon when I open that reserve gallon.

From what I have seen, Simple Green in the Ultrasonic does little more than just Dawn and distilled water.  So if there is risk of discoloration, I would just use the cheap and widely available Dawn.  Seems like simple green is neither very simple nor green or even very effective at cleaning carbs and engine parts.

Agreed….. I’ve run it with just warm water (out of anything else) with excellent results!

And I think we both know that it is made by "Simple Green" but it is way different in some good ways, and I think so far we have somehow now explained that. Might be our curmudgeon side LOL. We also know and are trying to explain that the cost per tank of it mixed is trivial really. The biggest PITA of it is that as far as I know nobody can stop by somewhere like Home Depot and buy a gallon of it. I think we know that if they could and did they would love it too.

It is amazing how well Dawn works for cleaning many things. A little patience and it works very well. I sometimes mix it with some extra strong vinegar to really strip grease and stuff off things, have to be a little careful with the vinegar, I don't use it on fragile stuff.

I don't know if it would work in an ultrasonic dip, but I saw a weird  clip today that I may try. It is a mix of isopropyl alcohol and table salt in a spray bottle. It looks like it kicks butt on built up grease and even carbon. Has anyone ever heard of this?

I am buying an 06 Toyota Camry for my granddaughter and may give it a try. It is supposed to not harm aluminum. The guy was using it on some car heads and other stuff with little to no agitation. I will try to report back after I do it.

Me, too, but in my garage. I was surprised by how brittle the bottle was: I had bought 3 on sale and the 3rd one (that broke at the handle) was 3 years old. What a mess, but ended up with a nice clean floor there! :)

I think I'll try some purple next?

I would be very careful of any dishwasher soap.  It is quite alkaline and will discolor/pit aluminum and many other metals.  It will strip anodizing from aluminum.
