It's Alive!
« on: May 05, 2025, 05:19:28 PM »
So lesson learned about calibrating your vacuum sync tool. I couldn't get a smooth idle and the top end always sounded rattly even when everything was tuned and synced. After doing a calibration on my sync tool I found it was way off. After fixing that issue and doing a vac sync, she purrs like a kitten and the top end is nice and quiet. Took the 550 for a spin around the neighborhood. Turned a few heads (mostly old guys like me!) She sounds nice and mean.

Those set are notorious for not working acurately, the gauges are very cheaply made

They're only an indicator. Check them against each other on the same cylinder.

If you have a vacuum pump like a MityVac, etc.  you can hold a steadier vacuum than on a running engine, make note of the offsets and you're good.

I like to use our vacuum cleaner - gives a smoth and stable vacuum.
Keep in mind that the engine of the cleaner is aircooled. If you use it too long it will smell funny  ::)

I think they're using it to calibrate the gauges.

The way you do it on one port is just fine.

That's what I did. All 4 are plugged I to the same cyl just to make sure all gauges are pulling the same. It's amazing how for off they can get.

You can NOT calibrate dial gauges by connecting all to one cylinder at the same time and expect any accuracy. One after the other OK, but not at the same time! Better is to use a stable airpump. Long time ago I went to my supplier and complained the set he had sold me was out of balance. He demonstrated me that nothing was wrong and informed me that you just cannot connect all four to one working cylinder. Interference.

I like the vacuum cleaner idea, never thought of that. I can see a little manifold set up that should be stable enough to see how far off they are.

I pump the mighty vac to the same in hg for each gauge to test and adjust as necessary so the gauges all read the same at that MV reading.

I use a brake bleeder that looks like the MightyVac gizmo: it works, too! Connect all 4 with equal-length tubes to one manifold and pull some inches, make note of how far out-to-lunch they are from your favorite one.
