1977 CB750A potential purchase questions
« on: April 20, 2025, 07:12:14 PM »
I am looking at the above bike shortly and the bike has 5000 original miles and looks quite pristine. The owner notes it has a very small oil leak when hot. He doesn’t know where that is coming from at this time.
Do these models suffer from head gasket seepage or other areas that may be the culprit? It also has a couple of small holes in the twin muffler system. Given the very low mileage I suspect it was not enough heating of the system and condensation in the muffler at a baffle area. Again is this a common issue with the exhaust?

The bike has brand new tires fork seals and battery last season. Paint and chrome is pristine and the aluminum is very good in the pictures. He is looking for $3500. Firm for the bike. That is in Canadian dollars.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

If using your phone, take screenshots of the pictures, crop the screenshots, then hit the attachments button.

I answered in your other thread on this.

I looked at the bike and it is in great condition and runs well. Compression was 165 X 4. The two issues which are a deal killer for me are the left muffler is quite rotten at the front area near the down pipe and almost all the way around with some JB Weld fix. The rear cones also have rot and JB Weld under the very bottom at the exit. The right muffler has a 3.5 inch JB weld repair underneath halfway down too.
Since a replacement exhaust is NLA and these ones while the chrome is good are a bit of a mess. The left one needs some type of repair to reinforce it soon.
The other issue was the bike creeps in low gear at idle. It was idling a little high so I adjusted it down and no change. It jumps when put into gear slightly. Maybe this is normal on the CB750?? The 1982 CM450 I restored didn't do this and sat motionless until you turned the throttle when in low gear.
Forgot my camera and not a phone guy never got that memo.  :)

Too bad the exhaust was so 'patched' David.

Automatics do creep. Thats why there is a handbrake at the side. To release it you press the footbrake.

And let me add to that so you live another day, they do not brake on the engine either. So brake before a corner!

Other than that its one of my favourites. And yes exhausts are unobtainium, but aftermarket there are possibilities.

Thanks for the update on the creep issue. I did see the hand brake on the left side. I don't recall the 1982 CM450A creeping after I did the restoration, yet that was a 5 years ago and the memory isn't great.

The exhaust was the deal breaker along with the creep, plus I wanted a little more oomph from the bike. I just restored a 1984 CB450SC Nighthawk and it seems about the same power level as the 750A bike. I would like a little more giddy up for the larger bike size that it brings.
