Choking down Mom's Apple Pie
« on: July 11, 2025, 04:04:11 AM »
Well I'm hanging out with my mom(99 years old!) for the week while my sis takes a break up camping on the Maine coast. My sis worries mom will burn the house down cooking forgetting having something cooking....
Mom made another apple pie yesterday while I was trying to decipher the instructions and start assembling her new awning over her deck.
After supper I cut into the pie wondering if she remembered everything this time..... she always made the best pies I've ever had throughout the years. Her memory has been slipping some of the pies she has done in the past year......
Well.....

Cutting it i was a bit leary as she still does everything by memory and that includes setting down and napping in the chair while it bakes.....no timer set to remind her to pull it out and I got scolded and shewed out when I poked my head in asking if she pulled it out yet smelling it outside on the deck.....
It looked okay inside.....

Well I'm hanging out with my mom(99 years old!)

Enjoy your time with her, I miss my Mom dearly.  She "only" lived to 94 and has been gone several years now.

I think I miss my Mom's lasagne the most, she even made the pasta herself.

I know Steve I'm sure you do miss her and yes I'm enjoying being here with her. We still play cribbage every now and then. I might take to the beach today if she wants to go.
She is just now getting back from her walk to get the mail and paper.

Found this conversation really enjoyable guys.  Think it's great that your Mom is still doing stuff like that @ 99 Newday.

My Mom & Dad passed many years ago..but I still have fond memories of her cooking and dishes she made[she actually taught me to cook when I was a child..my aunt and grandmother too].  Still have some of her cooking stuff [pot & pans..cookbooks.etc.] Think it comes in handy nowadays as the wife & I aren't totally dependent on pre-prepared and take-out food..which is healthier in long run..i believe.

Have a great weekend everyone..

My late mother-in-law made me a lovely Banana cream pie at the last thanksgiving she cooked, She got confused and used corn starch instead of powdered sugar. I was eating it and not complaining. My wife tasted it, figured out what happened and took mine away. I asked if there was any rat poison in that kitchen. She said no and I said give me my pie back.

Took mom out for dinner tonight at her favorite restaurant,   Fogarty's Restaurant just across the river into Maine. Good food, we had the baked Haddock. I'm so stuffed I passed on desert. I'll have to wait a while before I cut into the pie......

I had some Coconut pie today and we laughed remembering the not so sweet pie my late Mother-in law made for me. She was a sweetheart. The soft Maple tree that my Dad gave me for my new house is 50' tall now and drops branches every week, I thought of him laughing at me cutting all of the branches up. Makes me miss all the old folks.

Thanks for the virtual pie share, Stu.  Pie baking is truly an art.  Both my grandma's were masters.  My sister has had some significant success but gets too self conscious when she gets it wrong (even a mess up pie is good when it has the love baked in!)  I keep telling my sister she just needs more practice...lots of practice!  And I am always glad to offer my critique!
If it works good, it looks good...

Totally Sean. And you are welcome. I've tried to make crust and failed to the point that I decided it's not in me. My sisters though have it down pat. So they spoil me too.

In 1960 I got strep throat real bad while staying the summer at my grandparent's Missouri farm. I couldn't eat anything after the doctor shot me full of antibiotics, but grandma picked some rhubarb and made me a rhubarb pie, which I could manage to swallow. By the time the pie was gone, so was the strep! That stuff was fantastically good!
