AMCA judging Yankee meet

I am home from the AMCA Yankee meet in Greenfield, MA. I did not do well at all. Previously I received 95 points at the Rhinebeck, NY show, so I expected more than 89.5 this time. Sunrise orange flakes in paint is wrong…even when It’s original Honda paint. It has orange peel. Yep, they did. Luster on reproduction controls is wrong…”ever see a K2 signal switch with the horn beeper cancel button reproduced?” I asked. Or the handlebar clamp with flash- oil-neut- beam reproduced?” Ok, sure. Oh well, I will live!

Ummm, yeah.  AMCA is not known for their expertise with CB750's, or most other Japanese machinery.  That's just a generalization.  Certainly there are some members about that "get it".  And what can you expect really?  The world of vintage motorcycles is so incredibly diverse, how can we really expect some random group of volunteer "experts" to be able to authoritatively judge all this minute detail?   
If it works good, it looks good...

Sorry I didn't get back on Saturday Keith to meet you.
What bike did you show there? Was it judged on Saturday or Sunday that you received the bad points?

the "orange peel " for Honda's sunrise metelflake orange tanks is well known by informed honda owners, but not by any AMCA judges I know. I bet I know the name of the judge that looked at yours, Maybe I will give a name later. (Mac Murray?).  They do not seem to have any knowledgeable japanese people.
This "orange peel" affect is mentioned by a vintage magazine article on the 550F. That article is found somewhere here in the SOHC4 archives, but AMCA judges don't know that. I was told to sand my tank!
I had one "judge" years ago think that my '75 550 F's tank was a custom paint.

I did , reluctantly, help judge a 550 K at a chesapeake meet a few years ago. I didn't know it was the presidents bike. Many things wrong.....he got 99 points.

I thought I would jump on this thread belatedly because this seems to be the right group of people to put this question to.

As far as I can tell, Honda used two variations of orange on the 1975 and 1976 CB550F.  One is a metallic orange and one is a non-metallic orange.   Is that correct and is so, which is the correct color for a 1975 CB550F?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

The 1975 550F, U.S. was painted in Flake Sunrise  Orange. Or...candy sapphire blue.
the 1976 550F, U.S., was painted in Shiny Orange. Or..Flake sapphire Blue.
The '75 orange is a metalfllake silver middle coat with a candytone orange top coat.
The '75 blue is metallic.
Shiny Orange is a solid paint...not a candy, or a metallic.
The metalflake paint jobs were candy colored top coated.

If you want a pic. of an original paint, '75 orange 550F, I'll post some of my bike. It is not a repaint.

Thank you very much for this information.   

I picked up a tank and side covers that I now know based on your info are “shiny orange.”   I was a bit surprised at the color because you are quite right. . . it is a completely solid color.  Noticeably different.  No metal flake whatsoever.

Unfortunately, if I install these on my 1975F, based on your info, there would be a very low AMCA score for me!

Oh well.  The bike will be mostly accurate.

you are sure yours is a '75 ?  I'm not being sarcastic, it's just that I've seen so many people being wrong about what model honda they have.
