cam/rocker Q?
« on: August 14, 2025, 01:14:49 PM »
part 1, Does anyone else go out of their way to keep the rockers on the same cam lobes? I always was uneasy when moving parts around and wondered if I'm just being finicky and transferring my V8 automotive habits to my CB750's?

The reason I asked is that I have a mis-matched (too big) cam in my 836 but I plan to swap it into another head on a motor where it would be appropriate. I could swap the entire cam towers with the cam, that way the "bearings" would also be familiar.
(the top end is leaking oil anyway so it needs to come apart)
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

So, yes to part 1. That's the idea... keep everything together...
But, in the past on certain projects, depending on the condition of the cam and the rockers and just how much money do I really want to spend. ... I've swap cams and rockers, as long as neither is truely worn or grooved. Stone down any small issues and its good to go...  yet if either is showing any gauling or excessive wear, I wouldn't, but that's just my preference...
Start with the end in mind...

I just look for worn rocker feet, in case the [old] cam lobe had a groove in it? If so, the rocker will have a raised bump in that spot and will start to (quickly) wear a groove into the new cam.

This is MUCH more common in the smaller Fours than in the 750, though.

I know that this isn't his video on rocker arms or camshaft lobes, since i couldn't find it, buthis principles of attention to detail and attention to fit come through despite. ¿Is this the kind of thing that you meant?

Yes, that's what I was getting at. I'm doing a cam swap and think I'll move the cam holders and everything. It's a bigger cam (KH-F) and if it's happy with this set of rockers I'll leave them like they are. I'll still use some assembly lube.

It's always a good idea when the rockers are off to lightly dress with a FLAT stone and look at the pattern, especially if swapping cams. I as well keep them in order if not swapping cams, but if swapping cams it really doesn't matter(but doesn't hurt). SOHC/DOHC engines don't have a mating pattern specific to the rocker to cam lobe like a V8 flat tappet cam with a spinning lifter on a radiused and angled cam lobe to one side(which pushes the cam rearwards to keep it in place).
