Wow! I was last in that  place in 1977. I remember it being a really cool place with fantastic pictures of the canyon.

The building was constructed using methods and materials that may not get a sign off from a "modern" engineer/architect.
The stone foundation is dug into a cliff and relied on medieval geometry for stability.
A modern structure would be so completely different in its approach.

Family visited last September.

We walked out on the rock precipice, dined in the great hall, got a pretty good buzz at the rough rider saloon.  Bought a pair of socks to commemorate.

It was on the list of places i would like to revisit.  But in light of the recent fire.  It may be on hold for 5 years.

That's a great picture of the ceiling! It had lots of things hanging from it when I was there the last time. I've been there twice when I think about it: first time was in 1972 when I also climbed down the Bright Angel Canyon to the river and back up. Back then it wasn't a "guided tour" into the park, but a 'go where you wanted to' arrangement. That needs to return, IMHO.

Good to see it's solid stone construction;should make it easier to restore to it's former shape.

That is devastating. The architecture was great, as it is in all of the National Park lodges around the country of that were built in that period. Very mind boggling to take it apart stone by stone that was built around each piece of the bridge trusswork just supporting the ceiling trusses. I haven't done that depth of woodwork but it would have been one that in my younger days that I would liked have taken on if given the opportunity. I like a challenge.

It was built in 1928, a basement kitchen fire 2 years later in 1930 required a rebuild. The GC Preservation Society is already working on a rebuild of it now.

North Rim was the first stop on our NPark tour. We had a duplex cabin for a couple nights far from the lodge. There are/were several premium cabins near the rim that had many years waiting list.
On our very first walk to the fenced/paved promontory, on an unfenced/unpaved approach trail, 11yr old daughter with her fashion sneakers on took two steps OFF the trail and slipped in the marbles……
dear lord hear my prayer….. scraped knees but not over the nearby edge. That’s what I remember about the North Rim.
