Sunrise CB550F cafe
« on: October 06, 2024, 07:53:55 AM »
Think it's time to make a proper build log.

Bought this almost 2 years ago now. ( I already had redone the rear tire, carbs and exhaust ) It was in decent condition. But if you looked closely it wasn't maintained well.
Stripped bolts on covers, stipped threading on cylinder head, missing head bolt ( how!? ). To name a few.

Couple months ago I swapped the frontend to a GSXR750 from 06 with a cognito moto hub / tripple tree. Refurbished the suspension / brakes and stripped all the electronics and made my own diagram for it.

For the bars got motogadget buttons, signal lights on the end, motoclassic gauge, messnermoto throttle and a set of masters from a hayabusa for the clutch and brake.

Designed my own rearset mounts ( loosly based on the ones from messnermoto ) made them a bit more forward so the toe wouldn't interfere with the kickstarter ( removed the starter ) which works like a charm

Planned to be added:
- cleaner solution for the rear fendor
- redo subframe to get a straight line from tank
- lower front light by 2 cm with new brackets
- engine rework / vapor honed / cerakote ( I sourced a NOS cylinder head and had it staged 3 by Mike, will add the 592/62s from dynoman )
- little bit bigger front fendor
- custom side stand bit more forward to make room for 4 -> 2 custom exhaust
- custom exhaust

It's a bunch but I'm not in a rush and currently moving to a new house which requires a LOT of work to get me going.

Looking good! Any chance you have the template for the rearset brackets you made? I am looking to make some myself. Thanks!

Here you go. it's a CNC machined part. had mine produced by https://www.rapiddirect.com/ for around 100 a piece. get them in 6061-T6 ( that's what I used for mine and tested in a simulation )

For the F model you do need a bigger peg bolt. The 550K bolt is long enough. and some washers on the left side to get some spacing 1mm

Thank you! Do you have more pics on how they mount to the bike frame?

same as the cognito moto one.

I do suggest getting this nut. so you can fit a 21hex socket on there. a 22 doesn't fix

So how do you like the cognito moto front fork swap? How much has handling a breaking improved?

God, it's a whole different bike. I brake with 1 finger now. Cornering feels also a lot more solid. And having a rebound in my shocks is just a godsend.

Little bit late to the game, but what size wheels and tires you running? I have an old 550 that has lester WM2 front and WM3 rear, was thinking I might run those

I'm back at it—rebuilding the engine block.

We finally moved into our new house where I have a small workspace, so it's time to get this project rolling.

The photo is a little late, as the entire motor is already out. I sent the upper crankcase to a machine shop to get a stubborn broken head bolt removed, which they handled nicely. They also bored out the sleeves for the new 61mm pistons while it was there.

I've since degreased the block and dropped it off for a Cerakote finish: Tungsten on the block and Armored Black on the fins. It’s going to look great.

I also bought a '78 donor motor a few months back to compare internals and snag its improved valve cover. I’ve since picked the best parts from both engines, cleaned everything, and have it all bagged and tagged for the final build. Now I’m just waiting to get the casings back so I can start cleaning out all the passages.

I dig the black rims, I run the same look on my 750. I still cant convince myself to do a gsxr swap...I guess I need to ride one/try one.
Every way I chop it up its comes out to 1k for a fork upgrade, so do I want to keep it period correct or upgrade to modern....Its been years and I still won't pull the trigger.
