Painting wheels?
« on: April 15, 2007, 04:39:40 pm »
Probably not doable, but as I'm not sure if I want to farm out the powdercoating, can I paint my hoops with an available finish? I was thinking I could use some baked on enamel, and cure them in the oven, but would the take the abuse of putting new rubber back on? Once together I don't see a problem, but the initial 'mounting' might be a real nail biter....any thoughts?

I talked to East Coast Wheels a couple of days ago.  They're going to coast my wheels as well as lace them and also powercoat my frame, battery box, and swingarm.  They are 20 minutes away and usually have things shipped to them and I'm bringing my stuff tomorrow.  I'll let you know how it turns out, they seem reasonably priced.

I don't think paint would hold up well on a wheel.

vinyl edge banding on the rim edge, blue painters tape on flats, and bicycle inner tubes over the tools. work on a folded up blanket.

I HAVE USED RUSTOLIUM HAMMER PAINT ON MY BOBBER.SO FAR HAS HELD ON THE CHROME FOR 2 YEARS WITH MINIMAL
SCRATCHES. ALSO TO MOUNT NEW TIRES I USED DUCT TAPE AROUND THE EDGES TO PREVENT SCRATCHES.

I used a dupli-color wheel paint on mine.... installed tires without tools - nothing scratched.
If you  to ever change a flat etc.... I think that it would scratch fairly easily without precautions.
If you can go powder coated or a good 2-part auto paint that would be better....
Make sure that the chrome is roughed up significantly.... paint doesn't like chrome so much.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Hey I was following your build up thread on this forum as well, wondering if you had a 'before' picture of your wheels, the hoops themselves, I'm trying to see if these ones I have are worth salvaging...

This is one.....the "good"  one, the other was worse.  I sanded it pretty good and put 2-3 good coats of primer on it so I could sand it a bit between coats to even out the low spots caused by the pitting.  I just laced one up last night and got a couple tiny knicks in it - so the duplicolor might not be the most durable..... don't know what the difference was, the first ones I did, it seemed harder....the paint.  But for 10 bucks (primer & paint) it made all the difference.  I mounted my tires without any tools - a pain in the heel, but it can be done.  No scratches in the paint...  not sure how it would hold up to tools - would definitely use rim protectors to change tubes etc....

You don't happen to have any pictures with the tire off do you? My main concern is where the spokes/rimstrip goes...
