Hello from Katy Texas
« on: September 06, 2025, 10:25:14 AM »
Hello all,

I have had many bikes over my time (now 65). In 1978 I first had a 1974 CB 500 followed by GT 750 Suzuki then sold that and got a Z 650. Fast forward and I have had DT 250, ZX9R,GSX 1100, VFR 800 and KLR 650. I have not had a bike for about 18 months now and just purchased a 1978 CB 750K8. One owner , 15000 miles. It looks to be in great condition. I got it in Reno and my son who lives there had picked it up for me. In the next month or so I will take a road trip to pick it up with a motorbike trailer i have. From what I can tell so far one of the side clip on panels has a crack that has been poorly repaired so will get a replacement for that. My son tells me the lock on the tank flap is functional with a screw driver but a bit mangled. I imagine at some point over its almost 50 year life someone was trying to steal gas out of it. This part seems to be obsolete/difficult to find. I have managed to find a part number for it. If anyone knows of a source or has one they would like to sell I would be grateful. The part number is 37220390007. I have attached a picture as well. I look forward to reading more from everyone and sharing and learning.
Thanks
Andy

Welcome to the fun!
Maybe contact FrankenFrakenstuff here: he has an injection molding machine and makes side covers for LOTS of bikes like ours. I have a set on my 750K2, and their quality outstrips the OEM version by a stretch.

The latch: CMSNL is a good place to look: I'll check the K7 tank in my shed, but I think someone already got the latch from the lid. Sometimes I have seen just the door lid on eBay, too, with the latch. It opens with any short, straight blade: it's not a key lock, just a latch.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Welcome.

There is a latch on Ebay, but at a very steep price :

https://www.ebay.com/itm/116057542981

Alternatively, you could put it on a watch list at CMSNL, that has worked for me in the past.

Welcome from Lake Travis.

If the side cover paint it nice, you may want to do a better repair.  Be careful when removing the cover, that is when the brittle plastic will break.

The tank lock can be very difficult to find, any key will open them.  Some guys have modified it...

It's kind of funny, thinking about these latches: Honda added those to the K7/8 bikes and pointed to them in their ads at the time as:

"Locking gas cap lid deters theft of your fuel"

hoping to boost the then-sagging 750's sales, no doubt. They got fried over it in the bike mag editorials after that, when they pointed out (for all to read) that even a screwdriver could open the latch!
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Thanks I did look at it but its the wrong part its 37220439007, the correct part is 37220390007. Looking at some of the other threads I think I will make one once I get the bike here. Appreciate all of the replies.
