1977 CB550K headlight replacements
« on: September 08, 2025, 07:01:05 PM »
Of course another hurdle right when you think you are almost done. My headlight burnt out, I can see smoke inside the sealed bulb and the high beam still works. I have seen people replace them with H4 Halogen bulbs but I am not sure how to go about doing that. if anyone can help that would be appreciated.

To put in a H4 bulb, 1st you will need to get a H4 headlight housing(glass reflector)

A car type 7 inch unit will fit but the light cut off on low is wrong for a bike

If you look at the light pattern on a car on low the light reaches farther by the kerb and flat accross the road which is why lhd are different to rhd
Bikes tend to, but not always not have the extended bit at kerb

In Australia the 7" Stanley sealed beam fitted to Honda's is the exact same one that was used in many cars and they do point to the left side when on low beam. The Honda 500 sealed beam I foolishly bought on ebay from US points to the right when on low beam so it's not appropriate to use it here. The early model 500 bulb type headlight that I have has no left or right bias on low beam.

You need a Stanley 001-1970 lense. It has the proper fluting to disperse the light to both sides.

It had to do with local legislation. Here's the OEM lens Honda had fitted not only to the CB500K2 (model for Europe), CB500K3 and CB550K3 but also to a wide variety of models. I'd say, in the end it is up to your personal preference, what you want.

H4 lenses will drop right in, but your alternator won't like it. So find yourself a low wattage H4 bulb, eg a LED version

Rubbish. My bike (CB500K2-ED) came with a 60/55 Watts H4. Never (not in 46 years) had a problem. This repeated charging deficiency 'problem' runs only in this forum.
