CB550 Cam Chain Tensioner Removal

I have the head off to fix an oil leak and want to remove the tensioner to inspect.  The problem is, I can't push it forward enough so that the adjuster shaft will clear the barrels and I don't want to force it.  I am thinking the barrels have to be removed to be able to remove tensioner.  Can anyone confirm how to remove?  Thanks, Jim

Barrel has to come off. There's a pin in the bottom of the tensioner that locates it in a slot under the barrels so it doesn't fall out.

You do need to lift the barrel but doesn't have to come right off. Done it and it's been OK and you can replace the oil O rings this way. But most will say that if it is disturbed then best to remove completely and replace the gasket. The gasket often tears anyway.

Just get that first bit of lift and both tensioners are removed easily.

Going back in be warned - the bottom of the metal tensioner bar lives in a cast receiver bucket down below.  This bucket cannot be seen with a full pan of engine oil.  If the tensioner bar misses this target, it can be easily deformed, and rub against the primary and/or cam chains.  Additionally, the upper securing screw on the head will not align.

Back on this topic again.  I think I just found my answer in BomberMann650 reply.  I was pulling the barrels and the tensioner would hit the frame, not allowing the barrels to be removed. I had to remove the tensioner bolt  and the tensioner to proceed.  Now, going back in, just the reverse - partially lower barrels and then install tensioner?  Do I need to drain the oil and will I be able see the bottom of the tensioner land where it is supposed to?  Thanks, Jim

It's important to make sure the bottom of the tensioner mechanism is located in its pocket in the crankcases. I'm cautious and always remove the sump so you can look inside. This is a picture where the tensioner HAS MISSED the location.
And the second picture is how it should look.
