Broken cb650 Cam
« on: September 29, 2025, 06:53:31 PM »
Today I was piecing my 1982 sohc cb650 engine back together. All was well until I was in the middle of torquing down the bolts () on the camshaft sprocket to the cam, and it fractured and broke the cam around the thread. (Not sure if the integrity was compromised or if my torque wrench didn't click)

So to recap: I'm out of a camshaft, my project momentum, and (probably) a pretty penny from my pocket.

I've heard that a cb550 cam may drop into the cb650, though I'm not confident enough to shell out $$ for one. Ive found a single 650 cam on ebay listed pretty cheap though it may have rust scoring (hard to tell from sellers photos). I'd love to throw a 550 cam into it since I've heard they like the high rpms a bit more, what does that look like and would I need to get it ground to fit bearing journals? Also the cam sprocket & bolt pattern is different I assume.

Does anyone have a 650 cam that I can take off your hands? Or more info on the 550f cam-> 650 situation.

Thanks All!
