Splitting carbs
« on: September 30, 2025, 07:03:57 AM »
Hey I recently purchased a 1975 Honda cb550F. There is no throttle return spring on the carb. I am missing the pin that the spring fastens to that goes down in between carb 2 and 3. I’ve seen some info on how to take the carb out but is there anything I really need to watch out for when I try to split it? And do I HAVE to re synch the carbs? I’d like to pull out, take a ton of pics, put on the rod and spring, put everything back how it was with those pics, and slide it back in. Is that possible?I have already purchased the spring and am planning to notch a piece of bolt or something similar to put back in for the rod. Thanks

I don't know the 550 carbs. 750s I found, despite careful set up off the bike, splitting the carbs had altered one of mine (#1), when I checked with my vacuum carb synch tool.

That said, it ran fine before I re-synch'd the carbs and I noticed no difference afterwards. See how it runs, if it hunts around at idle, you can synch them then. A carb synch tool is relatively cheap a d the process is straightforward.

With the 550 carbs, you can (carefully) remove the front mounting plate and nudge the 2 middle carbs apart far enough to insert the rod between the 2-3 carbs, in that little hole on the sides, for the spring. While Keihin made the middle of the rod grooved, it doesn't have to be so: you can just use a short steel dowel or a cut off piece of a 6mm bolt/screw.
