Oil Filter Covers - Which is Which?
« on: October 21, 2025, 02:54:26 PM »
I found this shorter oil filter in a box of parts with the '72 CB350Four I'm working on, but when I got the bike as a basket case, it had the longer of the two seen here on it; can anybody tell me which is which? I think the shorter one is for the 350F, but I'm not sure.

Longer one should have a loose spacer on the oil filter bolt i think

Yep, mine is the longer one, with a long spacer on the bolt (on the engine side) to hold the filter forward.

Yep, 400F shorter, 350F longer -- but the 400F works on 350F of course (without the spacer!)

Just a musing...I've long wondered if the "long" oil filter housing was a way of sneaking some extra oil into the 350F's engine?
I discovered early on that the regular one fits and works, when a college kid ran his into a concrete parking block (after the front wheel bounced over it) and broke it. Getting the 'correct' one was going to down the bike for 2 weeks and it was his only transport, so he ended up with a short one. That spacer kicked around the shop for years...

It's a good question, and we've mused over this before. How much more oil, though, really? half a pint? Maybe for more circulation in the filter housing -- but why? Aesthetically the filter didn't really stick out much from the original 4-4 pipes, but I think the longer filter would have been more noticeable on the 400Fs wraparound header.
