Has anybody repaired their rear hub flange?
« on: April 14, 2007, 10:49:53 pm »
Mine's broken on one of the four flanges that hit the rubber dampers.

Anybody knows if they are aluminum?

I know somebody's gonna tell me to get a used replacement for like 20 bucks off ebay, but I really just want to repair it. Believe me, every piece of this bike project needs to be replaced with a 20 bucks part and I just about had it. Like last week while cleaning the hub I messed the bearings which had to be replaced with 20 bucks for a pair of bearings, then when replacing them the threaded retainer got destroyed which had to be replaced with a 20 bucks new retainer.

I tried brazing it first with a propane torch but couldn't melt the aluminum solder. then switched to the oxy-mapp torch and was able to solder the aluminum patch but the hub didn't take the solder. Maybe I didn't heat it enough?

Wrap some aluminum on the inside as a backer, then solder or have it welded.

If solder just drips off it normally means the metal isn't warm enough, or the metal needs to be cleaner, apply flux (Borax? or similar) to assist adhesion and flow. Use fine sandpaper or bronze wool to make sure it's clean aluminum oxidizes by forming a clear protective coat, the whole theory behing anodizing, so you have to be down to clean metal.

solder done right on clean metal will flow like butter on hot toast.

I'm mailing a rim to another member, and have one of those flanges left over. You want it, it's yours for the price of postage. Email me if interested.  :)

Try using JB Weld, that stuff is pretty strong and should hold up OK.
