A long, long wait for Candy Gold
« on: December 02, 2025, 06:23:38 AM »
I've heard many great things about Yamiya's CB750 body kits but they have been out of stock of the Candy Gold for a very long time.  Finally back in stock with a 20% off holiday sale. The Japanese Yen has recently been appreciating against the US Dollar.    Time to pull the trigger.  I purchased the complete  K1 set today.

All the extras are ready to install on the arrival.  Gas tank cap, tank trim, new original gas tank rubber mounts, new side cover rubber grommets,  and original early K1 tank emblems.  Side cover emblems will be removed from my side covers. Very Excited!

Great news!
Be sure to have the wings pointing forward on the side covers, we see that a lot here.
Excited to see some photos.

Thanks Mate. Will remember to point the wings forward  :) Yamiya is usually very fast with shipping from Japan to Thailand so hope to see the tank set arrive in about 1 week.  Here are the original vintage Honda tank emblems I purchased a while ago.  Earlier K0 and K1 without the surrounds.

The bike will look like new!
The rest of the bike will look worse if not polished etc.

A very nice feeling when open the Yamiya package. ;D

It would be fine to have several dresses for the bike.

Here are tank emblems also used on the K1 and are identical to the emblems on my bike.  Great looking emblems but notice they have the black painted background surrounding the letters.  Earlier emblems have very minimalist, small size black backgrounds.

I don't think I have ever seen the earlier emblems in Gold.  Very nice but expensive.   I only paid $32 for the pair.  I have not seen them yet but from the seller's photos  they look to be nicely aged in a vintage cream color.  We will see when they arrive from the USA.

It's very exciting to receive a new body set, I bought one years ago for my Z1, they can be a very good value as paint and labor here in the U.S. has gotten very expensive for high quality work.

The Japanese painters are meticulous.

I bought a good used tank, refinished, treated for rust, and primed it with 2 part epoxy primer.   It is all ready for painting.  It looks fantastic in grey primer and sitting on the shelf  but I was really nervous about having it painted.  To paint Candy Gold looks to be extremely difficult and I just did not believe I would be happy with the results.  To go through all that work only to be disappointed would be crushing.

The Candy Gold was, in the beginning (when we had to find a cooled spot on the Earth to do painting) the easiest one to paint when using real candy lacquers. Today it seems to have swapped places with the others, like the Candy Red now being easier on the ones I've done this century. I guess it's the kind of paint?

Really a shame to not use the original side covers that were on the bike but I'm quessing that the new painted set will not match the old paint

What to do with the old side covers?  They are in great shape with no cracks or damage??  Keeping them as spares might prove useful in the future???

That would be my first choice, but the OEM versions have a tendency to self-crack, roughly across the middle on a diagonal, if they are stored with any weight on top of them (personal experience). Keep an eye out for the restorers here, though: they might want one? I bought a set from Frankenstuff (years ago) when I found mine cracked-across after a winter storage, finally painted and installed them this year. It makes the bike look 20 years younger, so I was thinking about getting another set of side covers, maybe to fit me? ;)

Based on recommendations from SOHC forum members I bought 2 sets of side covers from Frankenstuff about a month ago. CB750 K1 and CB550.  They will be in the next consolidated shipment from the USA.  I seem to have taken a "shotgun" approach to restoring this bike -  just keep pulling the trigger and you are bound to hit something sooner or later.

I really appreciate Frankenstuff's covers because they have integrally-cast-on tabs for those rubber grommet mounts. In the OEM cover the 2 upper ones (that look like an arrowhead) were glued-on parts until the K4 bikes. Mine came off and I had to re-glue them twice since 1972.

I got my K0 candy gold set from Mark B who had them painted by Blake Conway, who has done some of Vic Worlds paint jobs. How's that for name dropping?  Anyway, they are gorgeous.
The tank is a wrinkle tank and the way I remember it, this was about the time there was a long discussion going on whether there were ever any gold wrinkle tanks. The wrinkles went away about the time gold color was started, Mark was going to sell the bike and didn't want to get in the middle of that discussion so I got his gold tank set because I don't care if there were any in 1970, I have one now.

Here's some bargain priced plastic that I only paid $30.  Size is XL and fits me well.  Very hard to find vintage clothing in extra large sizes.

Good question.  IMO red does not look good on gold. Red jewels on the candy blue green and red looks fantastic.  Amber yellow jewel emblems are on my Candy Gold side covers.

Order for the K1 Candy Gold body set was placed at 9:00 pm last night.  Yamiya already shipped out this morning. From past experience UPS international shipping is extremely efficient.  Once the shipment arrives in Thailand UPS generates and emails me a customs/import duty invoice, I pay online, and the package is delivered to my front gate the next morning. No paperwork, no hassles, no delays.
