Many Thanks for the excellent information.  So many different emblems over the lifespan of the CB750.  My 750 Four emblems are showing their age and looking a little tired.   If you had to choose between original at 2x times the price or reproduction - which would you choose?

Original

Reproduction

The side covers I will be installing are reproductions and not original.  Thanks!

personal choice, no right or wrong. Your money.

I'm an original guy, but I'm also not building or maintaining a rider.
you may be surprised at the color match from yamiya to your original side covers.

In photos they certainly look very close.  I would be thrilled if they are a close enough match and I only need to install the new tank

If your original side covers are unbroken, put them away safely. If you use them you will ultimately break them! Use the Yamiya ones, they are MUCH stronger.

Why are you not reusing your badges from the original side covers? Using a very fine pick or stiff wire (slightly bent at the end helps) to carefully pick off the retaining tab washers. They must come off straight and without forcing them sideways which will snap the posts on the badge. A little spray lube helps. Flatten the washers before reuse and push them down with the appropriate size deep socket on a $river handle.

Thanks for the excellent advice.  VERY stressful removing the covers. Super tight as if they were glued in place.   I carefully cut out the rubber grommets from the backside so no force was used to remove the tabs.    I agree if I continue using the original covers they will break sooner rather than later.

John beat me to it, original covers will break when removing them at some point.

I'm going to install the complete Yamiya set when it arrives  :) I really have become an expert at spinning my wheels.  Start, stop, start, stop, and sometimes move forward but more often go backwards.  Here is an original CB750 tank that I purchased and is now sitting on a shelf and gathering dust. No dents or dings, completely rust free interior after rust treatment including evapo-rust,  interior coated with a mixture of diesel, marvel mystery oil, and fuel stabilizer to prevent flash rusting (top is sealed with a tight fitting plastic cap but was removed to take this photo - I slosh the tank occassionally),  exterior carefully sanded and primed with 2 part epoxy, new petcock installed.  Ready for painting and it will just sit there.  Oh Well . . .  it was a fun learning experience . . . but truth be told a total waste of time and money.

I'm not overly frustrated and realize that every journey is a learning experience. The decision to buy the Yamiya body set I believe was the better direction for me and the bike.   Arrrggghhh!

Spare tank could always be sold to offset cost on new set.

Removing the old tank today and will be heading to landfill

Tank emblems with black surrounding background have been removed and saved and original vintage earlier emblems will be installed on the new tank

Here is the backside to the side cover.  Looks to be a very light misting of metallic paint and to my eye looks more silver than gold??

Very surprised to learn that the jewel emblems on the side covers are reproductions  :o  No HM logo in the oval

Many Thanks to @jlh3rd for the very detailed information on Honda emblems.  Very much appreciated.

All this time on the SOHC forum and my profile photo was a "fake" jewel emblem.  How Embarassing :-[

It looks like that gold has a silver basecoat. primer/basecoat/candy/clear.

Here is a CB750 K0 K1 NOS side cover currently for sale from Japan. The set is priced at a crazy $3000 USD  ::) Same round indent to the backside. I now believe my side covers are original??

repeating: according to Lubritech (back in the day) a candy silver was the basecoat color for Candy Gold .

to the OP: the silver you see on the backside of your cover is the silver basecoat applied by honda, further proof of what honda used. Honda didn't care about what you couldn't see. It is one way to sometimes tell if a part is original paint or a re-paint.
Honda did the same with their chrome on some parts. My '75 550F's chain guard has a rougher chrome application on the backside which can't be seen clearly unless you remove the guard. Kinda the same under the fenders.

$3000....wow..
about a year ago +, a complete '75,76, 550F exhaust, complete with everything including the honda box's, bags showed up on ebay for around $4500. I pondered for a day, then went to make an offer for around $2500.........it was gone.

Surely those side covers will be just as brittle as yours too?

Agree.  55 year old plastic will have hardened over time and become brittle. I was EXTREMELY careful removing the side covers by cutting out the rubber grommets from the back and then pushing the tabs out from the backside. New rubber grommets were installed with a small amount of silicon grease applied and the old tank was removed. Rubber tank mounts had disintegrated and were replaced with NOS rubber tank mounts.   According to tracking the shipment left Osaka today - next stop Shenzhen China and then on to Thailand.

Yep, the original Gold was painted over a silver base. I still do it that way. The plastic was sometimes a light tan color, like beige, and sometimes much darker.

That's interesting about the missing "HM" in the wing logo! I haven't seen that before.
