Dave's K6 (mini) project
« on: December 17, 2025, 04:44:07 PM »
Hey everyone..

I acquired another 750 (a K6) recently as part of a deal with a 76 Wing and an 81 CBX..

The bikes came from an old guy who hasn't ridden them for quite a while, but has supposedly been starting them regularly.  They all run, but need some work and definitely some TLC.

Visually, everything seems not too bad other than some surface rust on the chrome and an awful black paint job on the engine, which is peeling badly.

The bike hadn't been registered for many years, so getting it legal was a bit of a PITA, but all done now.

First job was to attack the chrome with Aluminium foil and WD40, and mostly it has come up well.  The indicators still look pretty scruffy, but I can live with that for now.

Next job was to change oil and filter (Air filter looked good, just a clean for that). Oil was very black, with a little sludge. No problems other than the oil filter washer was missing - sorted.

I checked over the brakes, and the rear seemed OK, but the front pads were disintegrating, although plenty of meat left. strange.  Also noted that the split pin was missing from the stationary pad.

New EBC Organic pads ordered and fitted.

Also noted that there was no split pin on the rear axle, and that the thick washer that should have been behind the retaining nut was absent - which meant that the split pin didn't actually lock into a castelation on the nut.  I'm having trouble finding that washer - anyone have a link or one they can sell me?

Finally I felt it was safe enough for a test ride (other than the old tyres).

Performance was down quite a bit on my K2, I felt, but it sounded great.

Back on the bench, rear wheel off for a new Tyre.  Adjusted the tappets, pulled the plugs, which were fairly wet - I suspect the choke worked it's way open partially during the ride, which might explain the performance also. It is very loose in operation, haven't looked at why yet.  New NGK plugs installed.

I poked my boroscope into the plug holes, and can see hone marks on the bores - which aligns with his story of the motor having been rebuilt and not too many miles on it since.  I noticed a couple of vertical scrapes on #4, but they seem light and I didn't notice any smoke on the test ride.

There's been a bit of wiring butchery installed, which I'm working through to tidy up, but everything works OK as far as I can see.
Also, the throttle cables and brake pipe were misrouted - I've fixed the throttle, and ordered a new rubber boot for the master cylinder as the one on there is split, so I'll  fix that later.

Next jobs are to get the wheel back on, replace the exhausts (after a good clean up),  and balance the carbs.
Exhausts are in great shape, they were evidently replaced in the last few years.

Overall, I'm fairly happy with the bike. The only other thing I noticed on the ride was that the steering felt a bit loose, so I'll check the headstem bearings - hopefully they just need torquing down a little.

I'm thinking I'll not do much visually to this one, and leave the patina as-is other than tidying stuff up a bit and trying to get rid of the black paint from the engine - I have a small hand-held sand blaster which I'll get some glass media for and try that I think - unless somebdy has a better idea?

I'll take some better pictures shortly.

That's last on the list..

When it arrived the clutch was frozen (since rectified by the AMAZINGLY simple procedure of cable-tieing the clutch lever to the bars overnight!) so I mentally wrote it off as requiring much more than simple maintenance and servicing.

But I've got my heart set on getting the goldwing rideable now, and have already bought the stuff (timing belts etc) to do it.

TBO the CBX is a bit daunting..  And jeez, it's heavy!

Beware of the CBX. Although not the most “desirable” I always thought my 1981 was the most complete package I ever owned. It spoiled me and I came very close to losing my license! Annual insurance costs were painful.

There's a guy in California that will rebuild the carbs and vacuum sync them on his mule motor so you just put them on your bike and go.
A friend told about it yesterday.

When I read your "beware" I thought you were going to tell me to do whatever I had to get rid of it quickly  :)

So very encouraging that you say the opposite!

I'm on a "package deal" for my insurance, so not too bad at all as long as I limit myself to less than 10,000km/year (not that they check or know the current milage.

Thanks Stu, I'll make a note of that and ask for details if required.

Supposedly they were rebuilt not too far back by a guru in Melbourne, and the top end was all reconditioned also. So hoping it will be OK for a while, at least.

So, back to the K6  :)

I've ordered a new rear tyre, and while I'm waiting for that I got a bit bored so started cleaning stuff up.

Everything that came off to get the rear wheel out has now been degreased, wire-wheeled, then polished or painted.
Which will make the rest look worse, exactly why I entended to leave it all alone.  Can't help myself. <sigh>

This bike is not bad though, it's cleaning up OK.

I found a few other things missing or broken, so have ordered a rear tank strap, the missing washer from the rear axle, a rubber master cylinder boot and a new cable set, as the throttle cables are starting to fray.

This black paint on the engine is really bugging me though. It's not coming off easily (in places).  I'm starting to think that the only feasible solution is to repaint it in black, and keep touching it up as required.

Regarding the “black paint”; I had a similar project bike a few years ago. After I had it running nicely and had run it several times up to normal operating temps I noticed the paint was getting “looser” with every heat cycle. Got the power washer out and +75% came off. Scraped and washed off most of it over the next few months too. Obviously the initial prep was lousy and I was glad of it!

I did a K6 last year…. It was in really excellent shape, but like you I started “cleaning it up a bit”. The rear wheel was missing a spoke, so took it apart and respoked with a cheap new set. The the front looked shi””y, so did it…… Before I knew what had happened, the bike was all over the shop!

Small progress..

Christmas delayed the delivery of my new rear tyre (the old one was so it it didn't even have a date on it!)

But now fitted, and as tomorrow will be cooler that the 42 degrees (C) we are experiencing here today I shall be putting the old girl back together.

Whilst waiting I've been cleaning up bits and pieces, uncovering more things that were "fixed" somewhat haphazardly and correcting them, and even managed to get the carbs synced - it sounds MUCH sharper now.

Good news is that the rims cleaned up really nicely, including the chrome spokes, so they will look decent at least.

Cheers, Dave

Nice collection you have added to the stable Dave, congratulations!
The 750 appears to have a K4 tank and turn signals on it.
How do the vin numbers place it? Are the bikes US imports?

Thanks Stu!

Vin & Engine numbers match to K6...

I'm fairly sure it's not an original colour, and it has  a LOT of metal flake in it.  So likely a tank swap rather than repaint, then?

I have none of the early history of the bike (past the last 25 years or so) unfortunately.

Cheers, Dave

Good to hear the rims cleaned up well.
The K4 Sunrise Orange was one of my favorite colors from Honda. When I bought my new K5 I really wanted the K4 Orange but there weren't any left overs at the dealer by then......so I settled on the Planet Blue. (That was before I got a job there, and I should have ordered a tank and side covers in the orange but wasn't making enough $$$)
Is your VIN tag a USA tag or the Australian tag? I'm wondering if the bike is a USA import as many have been shipped over there in the past 20 years(by shipping containers full!). Yes someone could have swapped the tank and side covers.
Looking at your picture, it appears someone changed the handlebars to beachbars?? (clutch cable is too short,  wiring is outside of the bars, the misrouted throttle cables, brake hose and wires).
I put Euro spec bars and cables on my current K5 a couple years ago, they are far better on my back than the 10" aftermarket bars that I sold to the original owner back in 1976 when I was parts manager.
As to the black paint removal, see if you can get hold of a small steam cleaner like is sold for garment cleaning/drapery cleaning to get in the fins or you can wrap sandpaper on popsicle sticks and sand the fins or maybe a Foredom tool with a flex cable drive to get in the tight places(I have tried to use a Dremel but they have too fast a speed and not enough power for their slower variable speed).
Have fun with your mini project! I have a 78F mini project on the lift the past 2 winters.....gotta get back to it soon!

Thanks again Stu!

I've just come in from putting the back wheel on, and the right hand side exhaust.. It's getting a bit warm out there, I'll probably go back out this evening.
Not sure about the VIN, I'll grab a picture later.
I agree, the orange is very nice to look at, and it really pops in the sunlight!
I haven't heard of a foredom tool, I'll check it out, as I really HATE the black everywhere....  If I can get it off teh block I might be able to live with the barrels black I guess, but I would prefer the silver, for sure.
Really looking to test riding this one, it is coming together nicely and I've picked up lots of missing split washers, split pins etc, and obviously rectified those so feeling pretty good about it all.
They are aftermarket bars, you're correct. I've re-routed the cables (apart from the brake hose) now and the throttle is working nicely and all looks better obviously.  They are a tiny bit short but I think will be OK. If not I'll probably locate a set of standard bars.

Cheers, Dave

Nice planet blue!

It's a nice colour, for sure!

My buddy has a K2 in that colour that he bought new, totally original other than maintenance stuff.

Hopefully we'll get that and my 750's out for some piccies sometime!

Hey Stu!

The compliance plate is Australian.

All exhausts now back on, pegs, chain guard, everything except tank and side covers.

I'm going to give it another quick check for carby sync and timing, and button her up for a test ride!

Probably Saturday, I have some other stuff to take care of now, unfortunately.

Cheers, Dave
