Late season fun
« on: November 25, 2025, 11:36:42 PM »
I have had a few bracing rides on this thing. It is pretty cold-blooded-what do you guys do for a starting program. I hope to replace some leaking gaskets, get a Delkevic 4-1 this winter, and refresh the pegs.

Welcome aboard the forum firecon from NH
How long have you had your 550?
What is the history of the bike?
What is the idle speed with the choke pulled out?
If it is hard starting, how does it run once warmed up?
Where are you located? Temps now are changing due to winter setting in in much of the USA, I just got back to NH from a 5 week cross country trip on my goldwing so I know some of the conditions in parts of the country. I'm hoping to get my 750 out for a last ride today if the rain stops long enough to warm it up and change the oil for it's winter's nap.

I bought one of those 77 CB550 new for my 1st wife in 77 just like yours. It started easily with pulling the choke out, a slight twist of the throttle as you pull the choke to set the fast idle cam, then adjust the choke in to slow the idle speed to 2,500 and lower, depending on the temperature and could slowly take off the choke after a couple of minutes. They are cold blooded.
What is the condition of the carbs? Have the orings between the intake manifolds and the head been replaced yet? If not, you will have air leaking in which will effect the cold idle mixture and possibly after the motor warms up.
How many miles on the bike?

Welcome from NC Firecon!

Nice looking bike!

Looks like it has aftermarket carbs on it.

If the exhaust are in good shape, save them if you go 4into1.  You never know, you may want them back on the bike.

Welcome! Those carbs are definitely not stock and the intake manifolds look odd too (almost like they are a set for Weber DCOE carbs?). Post some better pictures of that area, when you get a chance.

The carbs look like one of those 2-4 Mikuni setups.

+1....not sure how the choke is operated on those?

Typical start up procedure for a SOHC Honda is fuel, ignition and full choke on, crank engine til she fires and back choke off slightly till warm.

Thanks for the responses. The bike caught fire (before me) and sat for years. The carbs and manifolds are the Murray's Mikuni VM34s, so far I like them. Still need a little work. I have the original carburetors and the airbox, and some slightly less rusty exhausts that I might try. I like the idea of a CDI as well.  All it takes is money...so it might take a while.
