Before Paint Engine Pics
« on: December 22, 2025, 02:46:05 PM »
Does anyone take pics of the engine case after prep and before paint? The more I work on this the dumber I'm getting and seams like I'm going backward.

I used aircraft paint remover, a bottle of cold piss would have done the same.

Thanks

I used sand paper with small sticks (popsicle) and many hours.  Also used a dremel tool with course sanding wheels.

I did use the aircraft paint stripper on a couple of tanks, works better if roughly sanded before applying, and wet it good with the stripper.

Top of case shown in picture, about mid-way through process.

Thanks denward17, that helps a lot. I'm not as far along as your pic, but was wondering if I was doing it right. Its like refinishing an egg yoke, to mild nothing happens, a tad more aggressive and the blocks scratches and melts.

Don’t worry too much on the finish, just make sure it is clean! If you plan on using Duplicolor Engine paint note that Duplicolor also makes a “Filler-Primer”. I’ve used it on a really rough block and then covered with the engine paint. Works great!

I do it the easy way: I take everything out of the cases and take them to the machine shop (along with $120) and have them put thru their washing machinery. Then they bead-blast the results, and they are so clean they are ready-to-paint, right from there. (Top ends, too.)

Lazy, but pretty! :D

+1 on this filler-primer: it helps with the tiny crack-like surface glitches, especially in the early engines.

Thanks BenelliSEI and Hondaman,

I will for sure use the primer. I did not tear the motor down, it was running good so it makes it a little tougher. I get a little lost and frustrated when I'm left to my own skills, lol.

I used the primer/filler and then the Dupli color paint on mine, see pics....

Case, cylinder and head were painted, the covers were polished.

I didn’t have to bother with the filler primer on the Sandcast. Rough is what makes it a Sandcast and it adds “character”. Easiest one i ever had to prep!

I make o-ring brackets to seal the openings, & then use the soda blaster.  It has to be clean first, soda won’t dislodge grease in the corners.  The soda comes off best with the power washer.

I should probably give a little back story to this project. I did have the engine dry ice blasted, which cleaned it very well, but did nothing for corrosion just as the blaster guy said. I think most here would have tore the motor down and I would agree with that, I just not at that level yet.

Damn, that looks good enough to keep to me. I have more Dremel sh*t coming so I'll keep going.

Thanks

Nice neat job. Shows dedication to producing quality work, which is mostly in the prep.
