Quick question about smoking coil
« on: December 29, 2025, 01:43:58 PM »
First off, thanks for all the help you guys have provided to me. I accidentally left my key on with the handlebar control switched to “run”. I knew better. My right coil began smoking and I immediately switched the key off. There is a little melt on the wire insulation. This is a CB500.  The question is, did I ruin anything? Thanks

Well, it has a much shorter life at this point: when they get overheated like that they cook the enamel insulation on the wires inside, and soon it will start flaking off. The first symptoms are lower spark voltage and sometimes more power consumption, which the CB500 can hardly support.

The good news: you can get superior coils made by Sakura from PartsNmore: their part number 17-6823 is in several bikes I have rebuilt, and they work perfectly other than having a Blue wire (instead of a Yellow for one side and Blue for the other, you have to label one of them) and a Black. Their plugs are 'backward' from the Honda wiring harness, but that matters not at all: you can also just swap out those connectors (if you have some) for the opposite gender, and then everything looks "factory" again - I did this with my bike(s).

I’ve used a few sets of the “blue wire” coils and they have been working great.

I think the only thing I've seen was better after the smoke was cooked from it is a new springs being made in a spring winder machine: after the wire gets wound to spec and cut off, electrical contacts nab the ends and pass power thru until it smokes, then stops. That "sets" the spring's rate, matched closely to the thickness of the steel wire. Watching automated machinery do this is downright mesmerizing. :)

That must be the evil smoke though, not the magic stuff?
