Thanks guys, the big Yam single should be a lot of fun. Of course I can’t leave anything alone, so I’ll be ordering a less restrictive exhaust, air filter and an EFI correction device to cure an inherent surging issue, but I need to get a Roadworthy Certificate first, so I can get it registered. The battery is dead after sitting for a couple of years, so I’ve ordered a new one. I’m looking forward to doing some rides and posting them here. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Happy birthday Terry. Gotta love that big ol' yamaha,  looks like fun. All the guys on the FJR site are ditching the Power Commander and getting their ECM's re-flashed by a dude called Ivan. He is quite the guru and maybe he has something for that XT.  I can look up the info if you think you want to go that way.

I first heard of Ivan for his Vmax flashes. I believe that he also does Kawasaki Concours C-14 flashes.

Thanks guys, I've ordered new Delkevic pipes, less restrictive air filter, and a device to fix the "Surging" issue caused by lean running that these bikes are known for, that fools the temp sensor into thinking the engine is colder than what it is, and makes it run richer. Apparently the XT660X/R guru is actually here in Oz, so I was happy to send some money his way. I drove over to the storage place yesterday and removed the battery as it's only 2 years old, and it's a Motobatt, which are usually pretty good, so when I went home I put it on my big-arse battery charger and boiled it's guts out overnight, and so far, so good, but I've bought another one just in case.

While I was there, I pulled out the Kawasaki Z1-B and installed a new throttle cable, and fuel hose. The bloody fuel hose took longer to install than the throttle cable as I didn't have my trusty heat gun, or even access to electricity, so had to jam a tool up the hose to stretch it to fit over the spigott, which of course rotates up and down, so I was swearing a lot. Luckily no-one was around to hear it. The throttle cable issue was my bad, and may have been a shortcut I took when I built the bike during Covid. It looks awfully like the cable that I removed is a CB750 "pull" cable, which is both longer than the Z1 cable, externally, and internally. The rotating carb throttle "drum" (because I can't think of a better description) has several holes for the lug on the end of the cable to go in, and due to the length of the cable, I'd wrapped it around to a hole at the back. Turns out, theres a hole just an inch away from the bracket that the cable end screws into, and once I worked that out and installed the new cable, the throttle is nice and light. Not quite as light as the throttle on my K0, but way lighter than it was. I took it for another quick lap, and it was way nicer to ride. I still need to have a play with the clutch, but it's getting closer.

Being that it was Friday the 13th, I didn't want to risk riding an unregistered bike, so I parked the Z1-B, and rolled the K0 out into the sunlight. It was much cooler yesterday than the previous ride, but it started right up and idled reasonably happily while I put on my warmer jacket, helmet and warmer gloves. After working on the Z1-B I was leaving a bit later than usual, and had promised the wife Uber Eats when I came home, so I did a quick 84 miles, thru Eden Park, Whittlesea, Broadford, Kilmore and home again. Anyway, #19 was great, and hopefully I'll have #20 in the next couple of days. ;D

Terry, you are officially our fearless leader!, 19 and cranking them out! I can't wait to see that Z1B and your new Yamaha joining the fun.

Thanks guys, my birthday was without much fanfare, as I like. My oldest boy is in Sydney, I got a call from him, and my youngest is coming over today, so that will be good. I’m hoping he comes over this afternoon as I want to sneak over to the storage unit and have a play with the clutch on the Z1-B, and if the XT’s battery is holding a charge, fire it up and take it for a ride. Should be a good day.

Spotty and I started working on my 1999 Yamaha “Venture Royale” yesterday, it’s a US import 1300cc V4 “Land Yacht”. We didn’t get far as there’s some wiring that needs sorting out. We installed a new starter solenoid and were able to jump it to see if the engine would turn over and it did, but nothing happens when we hit the starter button, so we’ll need to trace the wiring from the starter button to the solenoid, to determine the issue. It didn’t help that the jump battery was almost flat, so he’s got it on the charger and hopefully we’ll get it sorted next weekend. It’s an interesting bike, and apparently was the basis for the VMax, but doesn’t have VBoost, so will be a more sedate ride. Hopefully it won’t take too much fettling to get it going. ;D

I rode a Venture Royale back in the 90's. It was a nice riding bike and it didn't drag parts in the corners like a Goldwing.

#2, 79 miles, 64 degrees. It is really windy today, 64 degrees when I got home. Wind coming from South, some places on the run back North the CB500X was getting 134mpg :-). It was brutal going EW or WE though, kinda like turning your head on a naked bike at 100mph.

Thanks Kelly, there's probably only a handful here in Oz, but it's an impressive looking thing, so will be an interesting ride, for sure. Goldwings don't fit me or Spotty, we're both tall, (I'm 6'2" or so, and he's way taller than me) so not having a bank of cylinders blocking legroom on each side should be way more comfy.

Yesterday was great. My youngest boy said he'd come over around 3, so I sneaked over to the storage unit and rolled the XT660X out into the sunlight. I installed the charged battery and it fired up right away. A previous owner has done some crappy mods that I need to rectify. It had two different hand grips which were loose and looked like sh1t, so I swapped them out. Both bar end thingies (I'd call them "weights", but they're not, they're just bling) were scratched up, so I left them off, and I'll machine up a much nicer set today. The rear fender has been deleted, which looks fine, but he used an alloy bracket thingy to hang the rear number plate from, and as it didn't have anywhere to mount the blinkers he just made a really crappy bracket from paper thin tin to mount them, and the whole assembly feels loose, and vibrates horribly with the engine running.

I tightened it up some, but it will need some alloy standoffs and better fasteners. No biggie, I like fabbing stuff up. Anyhoo, it was running sweetly and I checked the charging system, and it was fine, so I thought I'd take it for a quick lap. Another problem (that I actually noticed on the ride home from the auction place, but thought maybe it was being caused by the flat battery) is, is that the speedo is fcuked. It is at least 100% optimistic, so at around 100 KPH (60 MPH) it's reading 199 KPH (which I guess is as far as the speedo goes, because going faster doesn't change the reading) so I just ran at the same speed as the traffic around me, and hoped that they weren't all speeding, not that I had a valid number plate on it, so if I went past a speed camera they couldn't trace it back to me.

It's a lovely thing to ride, I like the upright riding position (although you certainly notice the wind) it handles really well, the suspension actually absorbs the bumps and potholes with ease, and the Brembo brakes are magnificent. I rode up to the hills in Eden Park, and snapped a couple of pics, while I checked it for any leaks etc, but there weren't, so I was happy that I hadn't bought a lemon.

XT660X Sunday 15 March 2026. by Terry Prendergast, on Flickr

I had intended just to do a quick 50 miles, but it was going so well that I continued on to Wandong, Kilmore, Wallan, and then home again, probably 80+ miles. Surprisingly being a big single, there's hardly any vibration, the mirrors (which I continually scanned for cops) were clear, and I didn't notice any bad "surging" that these bikes are known for, I suppose the only gripe I had was that I had to make sure I was in the right gear for a particular speed, as it doesn't like putting around town in top gear like my K0 or VMax. I've also read complaints about the seat, but didn't notice anything untoward.

My new Delkevic exhaust system arrived today, along with a service kit (air filter, oil filter and iridium plug) but I can't install the louder exhaust until it's registered, so I'll give it a service, and fix a few little things (I ordered a new speedo assembly from Ali Express, which may or may not work, but it was cheap, like me) before I take it over for a Roadworthy inspection later in the week. Anyway, 20 rides down, and 6 to go. ;D

Terry am I to assume that  Big Yamaha has ABS. If it does check the tone ring and sensor on the rear wheel. If it has that white corrosion that infects aluminum, that may be the issue with the speedo. The rear ABS sensor is usually the input for the speedo. If it doesn't have ABS then...............never mind.

Ha ha, what’s a “Biden” Yamaha Jim? But no, no ABS. It would probably be a good thing though, the front brake is deadly! I actually rode it on a dirt road to take that pic (for some reason that property has a tarred road for about 100 yards either side of the gate) and had to keep reminding myself not to touch the front brake. ;D

Auto uncorrect, should have said "Big  Yamaha".  I can't begin to imagine what a "Biden Yamaha" might be. 🫨

Changed it, that was embarrassing!
