Wiring in headlight all in through the hole?
« on: February 11, 2026, 05:56:48 PM »
I took a Bunch of pictures and marked all the wires that were inside my headlight bucket. Put new sheathing on them. Tach, Speedo, main harness, left bar wires, right bar wires, warning light wires. All hanging there. I can’t remember if they all go through the hole in the back of the bucket? Stick ‘‘em all in there and start connecting? Or do some stay outside the headlight? Sorry dumb question. Thanks

Yes on the K2 are as Bryan said, a royal PIA, all wires in through the hole into and connected in the bucket.
A long pair of needlenose pliers helps, as well as a powerful head lamp on your head to light up everything in the bucket so you can see the wire colors good. I have a couple of the Milwaukee headlamps from home depot, AAA batteries, that are ok, 350 lumens and get me by, higher lumens will be far better.
Here's one from Amazon prime for $12/pair that are 2000 lumens and are rechargeable. https://a.co/d/0coIvUXT

A good adjustable stool to sit at the right height helps too.

Ali inside except the leads for horn and brake light switch. I like to push them all in before mounting the headlight bucket to the fork ears. Spread the fork ears wide and push the bucket as far “back” as possible. Also flip it so the hole is up. This way you have more room (and wire lengths) to work.

I never thought about flipping it, would this allow water in? I don't ride in the rain much so I guess it doesn't matter. Good idea though.

I just flip it and push it back between the ears to do the wiring connections….. When finished, put it all back the way it belongs.

I have a single brown wire in a single black wire in the main harness that I labeled as open when I took it apart, meaning nothing was plugged into them. Is this normal?

Single brown would be small"pilot" light bulb in headlamp used in UK and other places, dont remember a spare black wire as that would be switched power, could it be for horn or front brake switch?

Here is a pic of the wiring diagram that came with the bike. It is slightly different than the colored version that I got online. Note the path in red. I don't have a blue or a black wire coming from those switches. But they do show up. Labelled PA for the blue one, and IG for the black one. Was it an option?

The wiring diagram that came with the bike has two sides. One side, says E-type, any other says, ED type, if that matters

Australian models had the "PA" pass light (flash high beam) built into the horn switch

Yes! Mostly from the high-pressure carwash. :D

Just to be clear…. I suggested flipping it when it’s unbolted and the ears are pushed out. Makes it easier to work on wires inside the bucket. When you’re done it all has to go back the way it was.

Yeah: I just "flashed" on this one as I once got a little Suzuki twin (it might have been a 250cc Hustler?) in my shop for electrical repair once, and when I opened the headlight, the owner had done just that same upside-down bucket thing when he reassembled from a basket case the whole bike. The electrical trouble was due to crusty connectors, but there was a "high water mark" inside the headlight above where the crusty connectors were. He got the colors matched up, but the white and rust-colored corrosion was stopping it from connecting.

That was a real good-running bike after I got it cleaned up, too.
