I can get a perfectly rebuilt set of 1978 550K carbs, custom jetted to match my CB550F for a good deal.

I'm currently running 500K carbs from 1972.  They've been reworked, but are old and worn out.  Not terribly smooth running.

Would 1978 K carbs be better than 1976 F carbs?  Did they make improvements?

Well, I've already weighed in with my recommendation.
But, note that to put 78 carbs on the 76, you'll also need to change the intake manifolds and rubber couplers from the 78 as well.  Also, you'll need the choke cable and mount for bar mounting.

Ooog - didn't know there were THAT many differences.  Nuff said - I'll hold out for 550F carbs.
